Rough weekend and needed some mental health therapy. Got back to working on the 60. The DNP carpet looks way better in the truck.

I hope the sound insulation is worth it. Ended up with killmat and second skin luxury liner which is a closed cell foam with a mlv backer.

Spent the day putting in the 3rd transmission in the past 4 weeks. After speaking with George at Valley Hybrids last week. the issue with the later model split case is that it has a larger boss around the oil seal for the input gear. I had to take some material off of the boss so it was not interfering with the lower rear idler bearing on the 4 speed. You can see by the pictures the difference in the 2 cases and the material I had to remove. I will fill both cases with gear oil tomorrow and cross my fingers that all is good this time. The transfer and transmission do rotate freely so all should be good.

The 4:1 Sumo gears will only fit a split case with the 38mm idler shaft. It also requires machine work to the inside of the back half of the case to fit the larger gears, Hence the reason for the later model case.

I have gotten very good at taking out transfers and transmissions on a 60 series at this point.

Had a successful test drive today. The 60 is back in action, just in time for the overlanding expo this weekend.

One month after the 40th Anniversary of her build date the 60 has hit the 300K mark. Looking forward to enjoying her for the next 300K.

First oil change on the 250-Series. Factory used at least 3 ugga duggas when installing the filter.

????

You've driven 10,000 miles already? I've had mine six weeks and only have 932 miles so far.

My Warranty and Maintenance Guide says the first oil change is supposed to be at 10,000 miles or 12 months:

Jeff if I got a 250 I would be religious about 5k intervals, especially on a turbo engine. I think the whole 10k oil change intervals is just a way for dealerships offering free changes to save money.

Yeah Jeff, I'd be doing an early oil change (500-1k miles) like "normal" rather than waiting 10k if it was my brand new car. I might even cut open the filter to look at it.

Between 0W20 and 10k intervals, I dunno, just seems toeing the margins so close. Everyone says "engineering and tolerances" but, yeah.

I've been doing used oil analysis on our Forester on every oil change except the first (which was free by the dealer). The first couple showed plenty of break-in still. I did the first at 1K and on 5K intervals since, so 3 oil + filter changes by the time the engine hit 10K. It's also not a turbo.

BTW, I'd point out the Tundra and Lexus LX engine machining debris saga...

I remember watching a video posted on mud I think not too long ago of an interview with one of Toyotas head engine engineers. And I think the gist of what he was saying is if you plan on keeping your car for 10 years and maybe 200k miles, then stick to their 10k mile oil changes. But if you want to keep the vehicle forever then change the oil every 3-5k miles.

I've been religious about the 10k changes on my wife's 2021 RAV4 (and here 2015 before that) and the oil seems fine after 10K. I haven't sent it out, but I trust Toyota.

Obviously "back in the day" (and whenever I have built my own F/2F) you do a 500 mile "break-in" oil change. And "back in the day", owner's manuals were explicit about that. But times have changed, and so have tolerances and cleanliness during manufacture. My understanding of the Tundra engine FOD is that was limited to a particular period of time in a particular Kentucky plant and has since been corrected. 250s are 100% made in Japan.

I had 641 miles yesterday at the time of the change. I plan to do 5000 mile intervals despite the 10,000 mile recommendation. My engine builder gave me this advice and it was pretty much my plan anyway. I do 3000-5000 on Marianne turbo outback. I've been 3000 on my 1FZ-FTE. Oil isn't free but cheaper than new engines. I do plan to drive this thing 10 years minimum hopefully 20. Might be the last truck I buy?

I also live on a dirt road. So I get 2 miles a day or more depending on where I go of sucking in dust that most people don't get.

Well, it does say 5k if driving on dirt or dusty roads...

I hadn't read the fine print yet. Was just going off my sales persons instructions. But seeing that now of course makes sense. Maybe I need to go 3000 now to be an over achiever :p I sent a sample off to Blackstone as you only get one chance at the very first baseline.

Dan1554, drove past your place last week, on the way to the property my brother and I got from our dad. Was driving a black 200 with a Polaris RZR on a trailer. Did wave back... Like the tent setup in the garage. If you're there next time I come by I'll need to stop in.

My little adventure with Spring packs not ended. Snapping noise in front while turning, R more then L. Had me checking them, well Centering bolt meandered up and nut and lower part was pretty crappy and in an angle. A little work to get it out, it was really stuck in there, turned out a bit longer than anticipated lol. Many of the Springs walked all over the place and centering them a biscuit. Getting it well, not not done yet.

I have a spare vapor canister that I'm restoring. I ran into an issue with the little bracket; should I care if the little corner is gone?
