What have you done to your rig today?

Took a drive up to my favorite tree, close to the wilderness boundary with the property. Felt great to be in the 4runner and on dirt. 4runnner is running great. A big thanks (again) to the @HoneyBadger for helping me get it on the road again.

But times have changed, and so have tolerances and cleanliness during manufacture. My understanding of the Tundra engine FOD is that was limited to a particular period of time in a particular Kentucky plant and has since been corrected. 250s are 100% made in Japan.

That engine recall covered 3,524 600 series LX, which I thought would have been made in Japan, too.

Now there's the 2024 Tacoma TSB for what is apparently casting or machining debris in the new 8-speed automatic transmission. This seems to be an issue from an Aisin factory from the sound of it.

Only Toyota knows the root causes here but it sure sounds more like process flaws than escapes from mistakes. It's also a testament to how their quality systems work for running production fixes and VIN tracking to identify effectivity.

This weekend is indirectly related to the rig but with more focus on cleaning up the garage space in anticipation of the winter months to make it a little less miserable. Installed a Slatwall, organized Quick Jack (next to the wall) tools for the suspension install, and collected and sorted out the nuts and bolts.

Today I pulled off my Taco's Asfir skid plates to make it easier for the local dealership to drop the engine next weekend. Supposedly that's necessary to change the timing cover gasket that's been slowly seeping a lil engine oil. I'm lucky the $4300 cost is covered by the soon to end warranty 😆 idk. We'll see how it goes. They're lending me a Tundra for the loaner. Will take before & after pics.

Two days ago I also had the alignment done. The shop struggled to read the instructions for doing the job for the suspension upgrades. They seemed to get it. But their service just felt poor, and they're the first to chew into the alignment tabs. The tabs are flimsy and likely best to beef up or maybe SAS. Pics are after the alignment job.

I did the Marlin reinforcement kit on the alignment tabs. It fit well, good quality.

Wonder if your shop didn't appreciate the witness marks. No toe-and-go for you, they had to do the work.

Worth mentioning perhaps that I did the braces not just to beef up the tabs but even with a 3/16" front skid I managed to catch one of the lower arm brackets and peel it open slightly. So once I gave it an attitude adjustment back to parallel I thought it prudent to prevent it from happening again.

I'll check out that Marlin kit! Thanks @DaveInDenver.

Oh boy. Peeling back, attitude adjustment, and hot metal glue gun action. Sounds like a good time to me! Sign me up 😄

Haha definitely no "toe-and-go". Yessir they actually tried. What they said is they really wanted to adjust the UCAs 😆 While the UCAs have heim joints that are technically adjustable, they're also a LOT of work.

I prolly should've just insisted they only give me a toe-and-go. Lessons learned.

Head start to the weekend with a driveway sandblasting session. My neighbors love me right now, and IH8RUST.

You take a lot more precautions than I do. I just put on gloves, goggles, mask and hat and away I go!

Oh no. I tried looking for a place, but I felt that was out of my depth. I found a mobile crew that does this. It's a father-son crew; I prepped as much as possible, and they showed up and blasted as much as they could, about 80% of it. I still have to get in the nooks and crannies to get the rest myself. I've attached a picture of the aftermath and skid plates. I'll post more of the frame after I get the dust out; there is a lot of it.

You know when you go to the beach and get sand in places you never thought of? I am here.

If I were a smart man, I'd have taken the bumpers off to hit that part of the frame before we started, but I'm not, and I didn't do that, so it'll have to be done the good old-fashioned way. Also, I did not have the spare tire rod to lower it, not that it matters. I have a brand new OEM tank sitting in the garage for the project's next phase.

80% descaled; the rest is up to me; wish me luck.

It goes in the garage now to keep it as dry as possible while I wait for my new motor/5-speed transmission to be built;
  • Goes up on the lift so that I can crawl under it comfortably;
  • I need to air out the remaining media from inside the frame, as well as other areas;
  • Going to place some dehumidifier to keep the moister (the essence of water) to a low;
  • Take the bumpers off, descale and remove the rust from that part of the frame, and wire brush the hard-to-get areas;
  • Wire brush and surface tool on everything;
  • Finally, POR-15 (what else? :) degreaser, metal prep, and coating to finish it.
I'm open to suggestions, tho. POR-15 seems the default, I also thought ENVIROLASTIC® 940 DTM, but POR seems the safer choice.

I ordered the Eastwood 2K frame paint when I redid my 40. It is ceramic infused frame paint and dries extremely hard.

I changed my mind. I don't want to inhale the POR-15 vapor and die. I'm going to hit it with the Eastwood Encapsulator + 2K Epoxy Primer + 2K AeroSpray Chassis Black Satin.

Is POR-15 vapor that bad? I mean I am sure isn't great but is it really deadly?

Per the MSDS I think POR-15 has isocyanate, which is considered one of the more toxic substances around.

Whether that's really materially worse than other VOCs in paint, yeah, not sure. But it may dictate that you wear a proper respirator and bunny suit when you spray it rather than just a mask if you don't want to die sooner rather than potentially later.

Me, personally, would feel better off painting POR-15 with a brush. But anything that uses a catalyst reaction should be treated with higher respect, it's essentially like being exposed to aerosol epoxy, which just ain't gonna be good.
