My ‘87 ran rich after sitting for a few months. Backfired on “high” rpm upshifts, for example. The only thing I can possibly point to as the cause is the power valve. I took the carb apart and did a simple rebuild that included a new power valve. After reassembly it didn’t run rich anymore. Just a thought.

Taking the carb apart obviously involves removing it and reinstalling it.

My 60 was fully factory smogged.

I had stalling issues which Jim C. identified as a prior improper rebuild that used RTV which flopped into the idle circuit under braking situations.

When I received my newly rebuilt Jim C. carb, it was a day or so before Cruise Moab. As the committee chair and trail leader (now they call it "trail boss") assignment chair, you could say my time was pretty compressed, so I went to a local shop that I trusted and asked them if they could swap out my old carb for my Jim C. carb. They said they could get me in in two weeks. I asked them what their Mitchell manual said the labor time for that job was.

They looked it up and said 4 hours.

So I went home and swapped the Jim C. rebuilt in and it took...4 hours. I felt like YEAH I'm a pro!!!!

Oh yeah, made it to Cruise Moab in time and all that.

Was that setup an improvement over the stock carb? Power? Fuel economy? Cold starts?
Yes, it was a very good setup. Overall much better performance in all of those categories. However, I’m not sure I’d do it again. It’s hard to source known good parts and very expensive if you can’t find a known running donor vehicle. Wiring was straight forward and I did a full fj62 fuel system in my 2FE swap to retain that reliability
