FJ60 Help Needed

Hello, my first post. I tried searching, but couldn't quite find what I'm looking for so apologies if the answer is out there. (Been awhile since I've used forums).

I have an '84, with the only notable mods being a lift kit. A few months ago the mechanical fuel pump went out. I replaced it, and have been struggling since.

It ran reliably for weeks between purchase and when the fuel pump went out. After the pump, it started showing signs of a clogged carb, so I tore it down and rebuilt.

After a longer delay that I'd like to admit, I'm back trying to fit the carb back on. I'm 90% certain everything is where it should be but two issues seem to showing up.

The choke knob when pulled does not close the metal flap inside at the top of the carb. And I'm fairly certain pumping the gas pedal isn't pulling gasoline to the carb.

All of that being said, I'm wondering if there's someone local that can A) come take a look, because I'm in over my head a little bit or B) recommend a trustworthy shop near SE Aurora that can diagnosis/fix.

My current plans for the FJ is to get it to pass emissions so I can register it. Then possibly slap on a fuel injection conversion kit for the reliability aspect.

Happy to answer any questions, and thank you in advance for any help!

Post some pics of the carb and we may be able to see where something has been misplaced.

Didn't the later 2F use the same Kyosan fuel pump as the 22R mini trucks? I am not in any way disputing Jeff, just that the spacer is critical on the mini if you don't want to damage it.

The fuel pump on my '87 60 did not have one, nor did the new OEM one that I got at Stevinson need one. The one on my '76 40 doesn't have one, nor does the F in my '71 40. I've never had to replace the one on my '78 45. I have seen several aftermarket fuel pumps that did need one however, including CCOT's and NAPA's. If the pump needs one and you don't use the spacer I'm pretty sure you're going to know it the second the motor gets fired up though.

Weird. The fuel pump on my ‘87 has one.

I replaced mine recently and it did require a spacer. The OEM that came off had one, new kyosan had one as well. Its a fun little spacer and gasket sandwich.

Makes me wonder if there was originally a different pump that got superseded by toyota at some point?

I know the struggle. I've had quite the adventure trying to get my '84 FJ60 to be a suitable (semi)DD. Struggles in this thread. (Warning, OP is long winded...)

A couple thoughts:

"It ran reliably for weeks between purchase and when the fuel pump went out. After the pump, it started showing signs of a clogged carb, so I tore it down and rebuilt."
  • If the carb is clogged, it had to come from somewhere: Fuel tank/tank pick up, lines, fuel filter, pump, more lines.
    • If you don't fix the source, a carb rebuild is moot. (Or you're going to get some reps removing/replacing it..)
  • I know some 60's had a recall on the tank. That could be an issue, especially if it's been sitting for a while.
    • You can pull the fuel level sender and get a look in there. If it's crusty, that might be a place to start.
    • Mine was crusty as, and the source of my fuel delivery problem. I didn't see the level of corrosion until I dropped the tank.
      • I was fortunate enough to get a new tank. Swapped that in, cleaned/purged lines and rebuilt the carb.
  • I'm still sorting through carb issues. The FSM leaves a little to be desired, but Mud has some sweet threads. I'm learning as I go.
"The choke knob when pulled does not close the metal flap inside at the top of the carb. And I'm fairly certain pumping the gas pedal isn't pulling gasoline to the carb.
  • The choke should be an easy enough fix: Make sure the choke plate moves freely and the linkage is correct/free of any play.
  • My first thought, and maybe I'm over simplifying, but does the fuel window have fuel in it? (No fuel, more trouble shooting.)
    • After that, it could be the accelerator/enriching pump. If the linkage is off, then pressing the pedal may not supply extra fuel to supplement the fuel bowl.
    • If it was installed incorrectly it won't provide supplementary fuel to combustion. I takes some finesse to get that pump aligned and working correctly. (I'm an expert at getting it not working correctly. 4th times a charm.)
My '84 has the spacer between the block and pump.

I'm in the Aurora area. Time permitting, I may be able to get eyes on it if you want.

The issue I had with fuel delivery in my 60 was the fuel lines back by the tank were collapsing under pressure. It took me a while to figure it out cause they looked fine by visual inspection but once the pump started to suck fuel from the tank they would collapse. Once I got back there and squeezed the lines with my fingers they would collapse like a squishy ball.
