Okay so I’ve done enough research but I cannot find anywhere on MUD or here with information about if i did the holly sniper EFI kit swap if id pass emissions in Colorado? Im strongly considering biting the bullet in the near future and just doing it. However my main question is would one still be able to pass emissions? Currently stock but not running well enough to pass I don’t think, and with the amount of wheeling I’m planning to do this summer with the 60 I’m thinking EFI would be best.

I would think it would have to be advertised as emissions compliant for the application. It would probably need a CARB EO certificate to pass.

Short answer is no, long answer is probably if they never perform a visual inspection.

I was thinking for the inspection just keep everything “in place” but I’ve had a couple cars they didn’t even do a visual inspection for. Had a ‘76 MG midget they didn’t bother to even pop the hood, put it on the rollers and had at it. I’ll be honest, the guys and gals at the golden location and the Arvada location don’t seem to really care other than a quick glance and to be fair, most of them likely don’t know what to look for outside of a cat and air pump. Thinking of leaving everything mocked but blocked on the off chance they do inspect and then make it go poof once it’s plated. From the one MUD thread I was reading, it’s a pretty straightforward job to install the EFI!
Or maybe the better option is to keep the stock setup and go test once it’s fully road worthy. It still has a cat and I did look at it before installing the new muffler and it looked to be in good shape, no holes or buildup. Stinks like hell until the cat warms up and then it smells like a normal car or maybe I’m nose blind and it just stinks still. Lol

You could always give it a try like you’re saying. They may not even pop the hood. Just have to put aside the digital screen so they don’t get suspicious.

Most folks here wheel their F/2F powered rigs with carburetors, some desmogged and some not. My 2 cents is the Holley kit won’t make it run much better than with a carb, if vacuum leaks are fixed and emissions systems are either removed or working correctly. My 60 runs poorly, but with a new cat and some simple adjustments it passed emissions. I’m not saying it’s a dumb idea, just suggesting you think hard before spending that much on a Holley kit versus other important stuff for wheeling. Have you tried going through emissions testing yet?

I have a Sniper on my 85 FJ60. It currently gets 9mpg and backfires on long bouts of deceleration, partly from a massive exhaust manifold leak, but mostly due to the fact that I also have a distributor running a timing curve that isn't even close to being correct. I also have a open exhaust with just a Flowmaster 40 to muffle it, It shoots 10" flames out of the tailpipe so that's neat.

In terms of emissions, I can't speak on that to much because I never got mine inspected in Colorado and I'm fully desmogged. From my research on running EFI (with emissions equipment still on the truck) Sniper EFI will pass when warmed up but not when its cold due to the Cold Air Enrichment Loop that the system runs until the truck warms up. So a visual check would probably pass?

For how it runs; I can't say the EFI is any less of a headache than a carburetor. When I first put it on it took me a few months to get it dialed into the point where I was happy with it. It runs good now but it was a kind of annoying until I got some (luckily minor) issues figured out. I would've stuck with a carburetor if I could find an overseas one at a decent price to work with my full desmog.

Ask @PVCsnorkel about getting 7mpg and backfiring like it’s shotgun season with his 2F EFI setup.

What problem are you trying to solve for?
Well the main thing I’m trying to solve is cold start and hot start problems in the future, that and the carb systems have been known to “load up”

not just yet! She’s just now getting to the point she’s road worthy. Still have a few things to do this week before I take it in for its first smog check. Might get lucky and it passes first try but who knows.

.

My 60 had running issues from the time I owned it until the time I switched to EFI so I don't have a good stock truck baseline. But I have never had issues starting mine in the cold or while hot with the EFI. Let the pump prime for a few minutes, crank it over and it starts every time no matter the conditions. I don't even have my carb fan in anymore haha.
