To do the Montana thing It’s registered under an LLC making it a company vehicle. It’s gray area because if something happens that’s what you tell the claims dept and in theory garaging location doesn’t matter. But they might require some kind of company vehicle policy as well that takes this situation in mind.

Every time the Montana process gets brought up, I have to ask:

What happens when you get in an accident and file an insurance claim? Serious question for those who have been down that road. My worry is that it’s pretty easy for an insurance company to figure out you’ve resided in Colorado for a long time (or wherever that’s not Montana) but the vehicle is registered in elsewhere. So do they deny the claim for fraud? They’re in the claims denial business, so they have an impetus to try to dig until they find something that gives them grounds for denial.

I just went thru this when I was involved in a not at fault accident ultimately totaling my truck back in November ‘25. VA plates on my truck. Neither insurance said anything about the tag or insurance.

I have property in Colorado and Nebraska. Colorado is in Weld, but just outside the emission zones thankfully.

Zero issues with my 88 BJ74 both times I’ve registered it in Colorado or even concerns or questions about the diesel engine in it.

I’m sure someday all of Colorado will have California emissions. It’s always been about the money grab. When they trying to pass the emissions years ago in Greeley, miraculously they broke ground and had construction equipment the day after it passed building the air care testing facility….

I’m registered in Nebraska and it’s cheaper, no emissions or questions and I can show up to the DMV anytime an be in and out in less than 10 minutes.

Registering outside of Colorado if you have the property is just the easy button.
