Toyota made the big deal about it. They made a huge deal out of discontinuing the 200 series. "No more Land Cruiser in USA." Then they wait a couple years and say "Land Cruiser is back baby!" Sorry not sorry.
I feel like this is like new coke, everyone hated it, but it tasted better than old coke, then they brought back old coke or, coke classic. They're going to make millions

Toyota is still advertising 27-MPG or at least in Canadian miles they are. See screen shot below, 8.7liters per 100km converts to 27MPG.

I'm going to say I don't have any grand plans of building a LC-250 to anywhere near the level of my 80-series. Sliders, true 33's, skids, and probably some sort of 1/2-winch bumper like what's out there now for Tacoma and 4R. Other than a little extra weight none of that should effect the MPG significantly. My wheeling has diverted away from crawling to more glamping away from people. Plus I have a 40 project with my son that will sit on 40's if he gets his way.

Winch bumper will affect it more than you might think. They increase front end clearance which exposes more of the tires and underbody to airflow which in turn means more drag. A ton of engineering goes into the front end of vehicles in the wind tunnel and you can see the 250 bumper has a lot of air dams and sculpting to reduce the coefficient of drag. All that goes out the window with an aftermarket bumper.

I was on a run once with some Toyota engineers, seriously. @Inukshuk set it up. Anyway there was a stock Tacoma, a lifted Tacoma, and a base level (not even SR5 iirc) Tacoma all on the run, all same engines. These guys were really interested in fuel economy... so they filled them all up, we wheeled for 3 days, they filled them all up again. The base level Taco had this extra front spoiler below the front bumper- it was rubber and we kissed it on a few rocks, but whatevs.. that truck got like 5mpg better than the other two. And those guys were convinced it had everything to do with that front bumper being so low.

I totally agree and when I said 1/2-bumper I meant something like below. Maybe I should have said 1/4-bumper. basically just enough to shove a winch in. Not that an 80-series had nearly the wind tunnel work as newer trucks but my ARB on that did not effect my MPG much when installed. The lift on the other hand made a big drop.

Small air dams in front of the cruiser tires also but not like that bearded taco.
The article discusses it. It had to be done to meet MPG rules and Toyota understands the disconnect between realities so the fasteners are easy to reach to take it off. On the Tundra it can retract itself but there wasn't room to do that on the Tacoma.

Regarding aerodynamics on the front end of our trucks, I feel like retractable/removable aero packages are a massive untapped marked for the 4x4 industry. When I eventually get a truck again (hopefully soon), I'm going to have to drive at least 30 miles to wheel. And to go to good wheeling it'll be at least 230 miles. It would be *amazing* if I had an aero package (probably a lower air dam skirt thing) that I could either easily remove and stow at the trailhead or that I could push a button and have automatically retract up.

An offroad company specializing in good add-ons that are also aerodynamic would be really cool. Does that already exist?

Nissan did it back in the 80s with the skyline.

Those bump ups on the hood behind the headlights have a bit of old school land Rover vibe to them

I’m mad at myself for forgetting to check the spare location for extra space. Hoping to upsize a little on tires without relocating the spare. Like 285/70r18. That's only a 1.2" increase overall.
