@DomOfTheDead what did you use to sipe them? Looks like a fun project.
It's top knotch redneck fun! 😜 I
I still use the same one I bought 14 years ago and have used it on many sets of tires. I have a 3 different head sizes I use and simply invert the blade direction to sipe instead of groove. Takes about 25 mins per tire depending on what you are doing. The 240v model probably outperforms the 120v design but maneuverability through just a higher amp extension cord is nice. For reference, I used a #4 head with round blades for this cut.

Dang, that is a lot cheaper than a new set of tires! :hill:

Just got the RAZR's mounted today, from what I read should be a good snow tire to go snowboarding this winter. Maybe the snow run too! I've never used Les Schwab before, absolutely incredible customer service and quick turnaround. Pricing attached. IMG_7258.JPGIMG_7257.JPGIMG_7295.PNG

They look narrow to me. According to Maxxis the LT265/70R17 is supposedly 31.8x10.8. Is it just the angle? How wide are those TRD rims? Seem like a nice size and useful all around tread.

Maybe the shadowing? Standard TRD wheels so I dunno. Here is a shot from the garage.

Yeah, that shot looks less super skinny.

The outside photo looked to me like the rim would be vulnerable aired down. That's one reason I moved away from 235/85R16. But those are 9.25" section width and the tread width is less than the wheel width by about 1/2" or so.

You can kind of tell here that when the tyre would squish the rim lips would get outside the tread. They're only aired down to maybe 25psi or so, they aren't super low here. I had to replace my rims since there were enough chunks scraped off that Discount wouldn't work on them.

Ha, those tires obviously passed my inspection. We must have wheeled a bunch way back then @DaveInDenver. 👍🍺

The first time ever going to Les Schwab they pulled a nail and plugged my tire for free. Most shops charge for this so I was surprised. Definitely nice customer service there.

Ok I'm looking for tires again for the GX. I ran the firestone destination x/t for 3 years and really liked them.. though it feels like I may have worn through them kinda quick? but my alignment I think is a little off, and I was also aided by a high schooler driving it most of the time, who reminds me of how I drove at his age. I can't find the receipt but I'm sure we got at least 30k from those tires, and probably more like 40k. But I want to try something different, and am most looking at the Toyo At-3.

Then I see there's a new Falken... anyone know the difference between that and the predecessor A/T3W? I wasn't overly delighted with the at3's on Jackson's old/my old/Mike's 200... compared to the GX they didn't grip as well in snow, and I ripped a sidewall in the river on Argentine. any time I do that I swear I'm not getting that tire again... and for that reason, any Goodyear dura trac is likely out of the question also.

I also see there's a Nitto Recon Grappler now.. I had their Ridge Grapplers on this GX for a minute, later put them on the 60... they were alright but I'm not sure I want them again, curious if anyone's tried these?

or is there another out there I'm not considering. size is 255 80 r17. I am currently running 255 75 r17 and they're looking a little small, plus I'm about to gain an inch or so in ride height... but I also ran the 255 85 r17 on the Nittos and I thought they were too big- could feel/measure the performance loss, and it rubbed a little in front at full lock when backing up. so I'm aiming in between now, 3 bears style.

I’m kind of in the same boat with my new 250. Currently looking at two size options but need something road friendly as I’m daily driving this. But at the same time it will see dirt and we are planning the long trek to Alaska next summer.

285/75r17
285/70r18

both are basically 34x11.5” I’ve been looking at both of those above, Yokohama has been treating me well lately on both the 80 and the Outback so they are in the mix. The new Duratrac has a 3-ply sidewall but I just don’t know if I trust it with all the previous failures we have all seen. BFG is always an option but that just feels like throwing in the towel and giving up. I think I’ve ruled out Cooper. And Wildpeak is not doing it for me for no reason I can come up with despite having the AT’s on my little lifted Impreza and they’ve been great.

Buddy here at the Toyo AT3 on his 2023 Tacoma and does not seem all that impressed. I liked my TerraGrapplers I had way back on my 80. So here I am going round and round at 12:26am about tires when I should be sleeping.

@nakman and @Corbet have either of you considered the Kenda Klever at 35x10.5r17? We have them on our 200 and really like them, we have about 6k miles on ours and they have held up really well so far.

I have not thought too much about it, but it's worth considering thanks Hans. Looks like they made a 33 x 10.5 r17 which is right where I want to be on this. Huh...

@Corbet that's the first negative review I've heard on the AT3 from Toyo.. I'm sure they're out there though. I also found more negative reviews on the Recon grappler, so I think that one is off the list now. Thinking about Kenda...

LOL, a lot of different strokes for different folks on tires. I love the Falken AT3W, to the point that it's maybe moved me from 25 years of continuous BFG AT/MT/KO use.

If I ever accumulate enough money to regear my Tacoma I'm 110% on board with the AT3W/AT4W in 255/85R16. But that's also driven not insignificantly by it being more or less the only middle ground choice that isn't super aggressive MT or pavement dualie oriented in the segment.

My Toyo M/T's cracked really bad near the end. So did JT's down here. I'm a little reluctant to run another set. We had good luck with a couple sets of Toyo snow tires on the Subarus and I have Toyo snows coming for the 250. I really want to run the Yoko G015's just need to confirm I can get the 34 under it as a spare.

I had the AT3W on the 200, and Firestones on the GX. I have an uphill stop sign on the way to my house. On a snowy day coming up the little hill the 200 would lose traction on all 4 tires... a little atrac, back at home. If I stepped on it I could get the whole truck to shift sideways a bit before the technology took over. Immediately park and then take the GX up the same hill- no loss of traction when accelerating normally, just went. And when I stepped on it I could make it peel out, but also got pushed back into the seat as the acceleration was easily double compared to the 200. Some of that I'll attribute to the skinny tires, as like you Dave I'm a firm believer in that particularly for lighter vehicles.

@HDavis how's the Kenda on Monument hill when it's super snowy out? Like downhill, borderline panic braking, evasive maneuvering, etc. to me that's the only test that matters, everything else I can compensate for with air pressure, line selection, skinny pedal, try again, or recovery gear. Toyo MT and Nitto Trail Grapplers both fail this test IMO, the Ridge Grapplers were better but still not great. I know that if I want performance like a Blizzak I should just get blizzaks.. but dang it those Firestones were really good for this. Curious if the Kenda competes?

FWIW

I have never tried the Destination X/T so I can only go on word of mouth such as you @nakman. The chatter is that the AT3W was a good snow tire and I've found it so compared to BFG KO2. If the Firestone is better then I'll also be tempted.

A lot of variables at work, though. Tacoma with longer (gotta be at least a foot more) wheelbase, stick shift, no VSC/TRAC, leaf springs, gobs of weight over the rear axle... The truck does have 1990s style tech ABS.

Might be worth factoring in that I very rarely deal with snowy roads in town and the majority of what I do in the winter is on the western slope where CDOT maintains roads more similar to how they did 20 years ago. Not necessarily hyper aggressive and on the Mesa they struggle to keep a single lane open over the top in the winter. So it's usually deeper snow vs packed and icy conditions, for example this is state highway 65 by Mesa Top on Jan 20, 2023.
