Matt is a well respected member of the community.
More so as an authoritative knowledge source than as a retail vendor.

Set expectations appropriately and research mud when considering using him as a source.

While obviously well intended and clearly knowledgeable he has suffered the scalability issues many have when trying to solo-serve the larger community.

In short - he is an amazing resource
But not in a “need it anytime soon” type of way.

To his credit he recently self-paused new orders to clear his backlogged delivery issues

I’ve talked to Toyota Matt on the phone many times. @simps80 nailed it: incredibly knowledgeable, and a one man show. The sheer amount of solutions for the old trucks that he’s single handedly keeping alive is incredible. Good dude, sometimes you have to wait a bit for your order to come through.

@simps80 Good review, Mike. You and I have been around long enough to have seen this scenario before. You put it very well.

Yeah, I know Matt pretty well and have done lots of business with him. He was super helpful and interested in my Stout project as well. He's pretty chatty but I'm a good listener. 😉

Long time since an update on the Minnesota 40. Haven't had any time to touch it since the divorce and with the sketchy clutch release bearing it's been sitting in the garage. Divorce over, new garage in order and house/renovation projects at a good stop point for winter, it's time to work on Toyotas! New parts are here and more incoming from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters so decided to dive in while on my Winter break. Getting it ready for Cruise Moab I hope!

Decided to pull the top so i can use the gantry crane in my new shop to lower the trans/transfer.🙂 had a couple of my co workers over to help lift top off. Should make dropping the trans and transfer case easier. Clutch, transfer case, pto and parking brake all need service.

I don't think the top has ever been off this 40! All the hardware looked untouched and came out nicely and the weatherstripping was stuck tight and hard as a rock. I had to use a hilift and a 2x4 to break it free.

The headliner was petrified to the windshield seal and I found a couple of petrified fishing Flys stuck up there too. Pretty cool.

I was concerned about rust knowing the windshield had never been folded on this thing, but it proved me wrong. Looked pretty nice under there with only a small amount of rust.

The oem weatherstrip and frame looks pretty good!

And if anyone was curious, an fj40 top fits perfect stored on a Stout bed! 😉

A little more progress today. She's super leaky and greasy.

I struggled a bit getting the parking brake drum off. The nut was cranked on super tight. Air tools to the rescue! The seal surface isn't scored bad, but enough that I might speedi sleeve it like Paul @LARGEONE did on his 40.

Sleeve it?

Once I got all the linkages and lines disconnected I was able to unbolt it from the bell housing and drop it down with no issues. Hopefully it goes back in as easily. ;)

Time to clean it up and tear into it.

The throw out bearing actually looks and feels fine. Scratching my head now about what possibly could have been causing the horrible noise?
I'll repost the video when I find it. I guess I have all new bearings though, so whatever it is will probably get replaced.

Edit: Here's the old video

Georg makes an output seal housing that holds two output seals for the drum, supposed to be the end all be all solution!

I Speedi sleeved mine and it still leaks. I don’t know what I would try next time I tear into it.

Tearing down the 3 speed box I noticed the input shaft tip is worn where the pilot rides. Thinking this might be where the noise was coming from?

I have a spare 3 speed for parts and am going to use the 1st gear out of as the original has some damage to the teeth probably from past drivers not being used to non synchro 1st. The input shaft on the spare trans is in better shape but the splines are a bit crusty from being out in the weather. Think it would be worthwhile to swap the shafts too? Was hoping to not because I don't have new bearing for the trans and the originals seem fine.

Damaged 1st on top and spare on bottom I'll use.

Looks like about .15mm wear on the original input pilot bearing surface.

Think it's worth swapping?

is the smaller one still really smooth? Or is it bumpy where the brown stuff is?

also do you have a 0-1" micrometer? would be a more accurate way to measure that, or even use the fatter parts of the caliper jaws. I get that it's tough when taking a pic.

No question from your video. That's either pilot or throwout bearing (those only spin with the clutch pedal depressed). And you said the throwout was good, and that wear sure says it's a pilot bearing.
