Dom, the rolled 80 I purchased still has a tank that I do not have a need for. I don't know if it is the same tank as a 90 or not? I have not looked inside yet but can in the next day or so.

What you took out doesn't look OE to me. The wire splice and hose clamps...
That's what I was going to ask about. Worm gear hose clamps always catch my eye after having ripped open my skin one them enough times.

A guy in my Kokopelli group last year had an 80 with two stock Toyota fuel tanks. One was the stock 80 tank, and the second was a stock Toyota Tercel tank that he said fits perfect in the spare tire holder space. He'd set it up to have a pump, with valve & hose to "manually" transfer to the regular 80 tank or to a jerry can or to someone else's truck. Food for thought. Maybe if you're unable to find a replacement 80 tank, consider a Tercel tank. Or do both if you can :D it seemed like a cool setup and for all intents/purposed used only Toyota parts.

Similar idea, but there's a company called Trail'd that builds 6 & 14 gallon donut-shaped poly tanks that secure with the spare tire hoist. I was going to do an onboard water system (which I'm rethinking), but it could just as easily be used "off label" for fuel. No mounting fabrication required - literally just hook the spare tire holder through the middle and hoist it up until it's tight.

We will be picking up a tank and sender, thanks to @Capriblue45 , and plan on just swapping out both.

The wiring was spliced on the existing sender at some point due to connector failure that also failed as i disconnected it from the pump. I have found the smaller style pump which seems to be a later model 80 pump, instead of the earlier 3FE version.

The fun part now is pumping out the 3/4 full rusty tank to begin removal. :cautious:

Dom I used a hand transfer pump like this to empty out the tank before I dropped it. 8 Bucks at harbor freight.

Does an 80 not have a drain plug in the bottom of the tank like a 60?

I still have 2 gallons of fuel (of 14g total) that I drained from my 60 … I think it’s from 2015 if anyone wants if for free! 🤣

I used the drain plug when I cleaned out my 60 tank but didn't want to risk damaging a very clean tank for Dom and Brandi.

Damn that IS clean. And yeah, sometimes if the plug hasn’t moved since it left the factory, there’s a risk of damaging the threads. I think I came close to that when draining mine … but I was eligible for a new tank under the recall so it only had to last a month!

I wonder if they still honor the recall on the 60 tanks as I can guarantee mine is original and it would be nice to replace it when I do the chassis swap.

my tank was clean like this when i did the fuel pump on my 80 after it failed coming home from Argentine a few years ago, I was horrified when I opened this tank and found this rusty mess (insert Nietzsche abyss quote here)

I have a cheap drill powered transfer pump that I have been using that takes some of the forearm work out of the equation but I will use the tank drain plug as I did not know about its existence. Once again, too many years of working on GM products has me expecting the worst for maintenance based design 😅

When i did the fuel pump on the 4Runner i used a motorcycle jack to lower and raise it... worked great!!! the tank was full too!
Stupid pump died right after getting gas. drove home, went to leave and nothing.

the 3/4 full rusty
I can think of a few ways to dispose of it once you get it out :) I still have that 3 gallon can from last October in Moab. We burned a little bit there. A bit later at home I gave 1-2 gals to a friend visiting who was driving a rental. I used the remainder in my pressure washer to get mud off my truck. Worked out great.

Being so rusty, maybe the best option is to use a rental for disposal. I'm not condoning use of rusty gas in any vehicle, but IDK, it might be nicer compared to normal treatment rentals get.

the forearm work out
LOL! I cannot help but last cuz I know what you mean.

@Crash 10000% agreed. Murphy was an optimist!

Today was an extra special day! Knitty Gritty arrived home in one piece after her very first trail! She did great, a little more tweaking but extremely happy with how she performed today. This wouldn’t have been possible without the help of several people and the biggest thank you to @DomOfTheDead! Aside from being the best mechanic ever, he’s just extremely supportive and encouraging to me. Can’t wait for many more trails in his and hers models with my favorite human.
