My 60 also makes a very mechanical sounding ticking noise I can only hear from inside the cabin. I tracked it down to a leaking EGR J-pipe. It goes away when I disconnect the EGR valve vacuum line, as well. Exhaust leaks can sound very much like metal on metal.

I should check around the egr delete plate. Mine has the full desmog. I didn't expect a noise from there since there should not be positive pressure inside the intake manifold.

Very well could still be coming from the cat where I have a known leak.

Check the j-pipe block off plate on the rear exhaust manifold horn.

I appreciate tip, should have added that I have headers. 😎

Also possible they could have a leak.... I might hook up the shop vac to the exhaust and try the old soapy water trick to check for any pinholes.

New catalytic converter looks super high flow. Crazy engineering team over at manafre. 20250911_201520.jpg20250911_200303.jpg

I don't understand why some hate on Man-a-Fre; they have good products.

I agree. I also know is fast to weld up, but this was on backorder and got here 5 days. At least I can now confirm if my tick noise is from the leaky cat.

That's unfortunate, Jim, and based on our interactions, something tells me you have a much higher bar for vendors to clear.

It was a pretty basic series of f**k ups on their part, no high bar, nothing complicated at all. I was left down $30 from where I started and no product. I considered it a donation to their business so I wouldn't have to continue wasting time interacting with them. Well worth the small amount of lost money.

Ticking is gone! The cat was definitely making some noise. Sounds like its full of sand. Quick install even fiddling a bit with the bolts.

Slight tick still but I belive it is the classic 2f sewing machine noise. Not pingy or as metallic. I can hear a lot more from the engine with all the sound deadening.

I’ve had both great and horrible experiences with them. Worst one was a 40 header that the weld joints between the tubes and flange were never machined flat on the head side so the flange and head didn’t mate together at all. I called them and sent pictures and they didn’t believe me. Had to send it back for their inspection before they sent another header. Cost me three weeks of having the friend’s 40 I was doing the work on in my garage. Nobody’s perfect but they dropped the ball on that one.

Yup, I was worried it would sound too throaty, or be loud, or not sound like a 2F, but it's just right. Nothing extravagant.

Congrats!

I can only speculate about the other experiences, but mine went like this: the delivery went wrong, Rick made it right; he was responsive, and within a day, he corrected it. Within a week, we were back on track. Did I want them to get it right on the first go? You betcha, but my tolerance for this niche is considerably higher. I'm not here to defend them, but I've had enough time with plenty of shops within the last year to have at least a personal benchmark of who I might shop with. You're right, they're not perfect, but they're not abandoning the conversation like some other vendors, who shall remain nameless.

OK, now I'm just happy my rig is twinsies with Kevin's.

Yes, manafre has been in the Cruiser business for a long time by making great products and providing great service. “Others” have come and gone.
Edit:
My first purchase from manafre was a 40 pressure plate and clutch disc in 3/73.

Didn't Man-A-Fre go out of business and then rise from the ashes some years later?
Don’t think they completely closed their doors but did experience some shuffling of ownership/management for a bit.

Update.

So the cat was definitely clogged. I am ashamed I did not notice it earlier.

We drove to Ouray for the weekend. About 3hrs from Carbondale. Feels like a bit more power but the two major improvements are;

1st - MPG. Fingers crossed but its looking like I am going to get almost an extra 100 miles from this tank. Im at 170 on the odometer, which reads slow with the 33s, and have not hit 1/2 empty yet. Previously I was only getting 300 miles on the odometer from the 38 gal tank.

2nd - zero issues with the voltage spiking. Previously this was happening 20 to 30 min into each drive cycle. I suspect that the engine was running hot with the restriction causing the alt to overheat. Ditto for the AC compressor that stopped making noise. Not scientific, but the engine bay felt way cooler when we got here.

Pretty stoked!
