I think it would work well for anything that is constantly moving. On the 60 knuckles most of us don’t leave the hubs locked all the time so the grease separates quickly. The 80 has front hubs “locked” by design, yes?

An 80 owner can chime in on this but Marlin seals were the bomb for 80s and just didn’t work very well for 60 axles with OEM seals being the best. At least that’s what I remember from experience and hearsay.

Yes I had not thought about that. But even in PT 4wd vehicles I always try to put them in 4wd once a month to keep everything lubed.

As expected the knuckles currently leak much more when the hubs are engaged.

I used the Marlin seals on my 60 at the recommendation of Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters. Time will tell.

More cross info! I am probably the confused one but I thought it was the other way around. I was told to use OEM on the 80, but Marlin on the 60.

I can only afford enough shop towels to do this once! Plus whatever door or piece of furniture I accidentally transfer Moly grease to....

By the way, I love how your 60 came out. Same color as mine, I think same year, 1987. Mine aspires to look as good as yours someday. For now it looks a bit like an old faded beer can in a ditch, but as @satchel once said to me, don’t paint it, it looks like a survivor. So I have that going for me. That and almost no rust (edit: that I can see…)

I think you are right and I'd be the first one to admit faulty memory and is why I asked for an 80 owners input. It's been about 10 years since I had to do a front axle rebuild/seal replacement so whatever I put in is working! Should probably not have said that - off to knock on wood.

Thanks! I am having a hard time driving it some days. I keep getting asked "why did you restore it just to drive it around?".

I think cruisers are meant to be driven, not to live garage queens. Now that the 80 is going to be out of the count and Imelda is gone Bender has to see some daily duty. Only 165k on the engine so she has plenty of life left. Actually planning to take her out on her first camping trip for my birthday in March. I enjoy driving the 60 to work much more than a modern toyota.

I do love the old Toyota patina though. Imelda looks perfect with a bit of rust on the body.

It is the other way around. The Marlin seals wear quickly on 80s that are constantly turning, but on earlier rigs the hubs are unlocked and not turning for the majority of miles driven.

I’m glad Mike and Jeff chimed in, I remember hearing something about the Marlin seals when I was getting ready to do my 80 knuckles. Possibly something about them being too hard of a material and damaging something. I didn’t quite understand at the time, and ended up using a Sumo Gear kit with factory seals, but it makes sense now considering the full-time/part-time difference between the 60 and 80.

i'll echo others.. Marlin seals are great for part time 4wd trucks and Land Cruisers.... Not so good with full time 80's

I've never used the Marlin seals but from the description, it sounds like a double lip seal. A standard oil seal is directional in that it must have OIL on the correct side of the seal to create hydrodynamic pressure. This allows the shaft to spin without damaging the seal or the shaft.

I don't get how a double seal could possibly work unless it is supposed to have oil on both sides of the seal to make both lips float on the shaft, (like between the transmission and transfer in the 60s). A traditional single lip seal installed on a properly centered shaft that doesn't have a wear groove where the seal is riding should be the best overall solution on both full time and part time axles.

Took a little trip out to Fruita for a run.

5th gear is so nice on the highway.

I also learned you can install a pet hammock that requires headrests to secure the upper on a 60 bench seat. Loop the belts behind the seat into the cargo area and attach. Excuse my handsome model.

75mph with 33s according to the gps
Does your speedo match actual speed, or is that what you’re saying here? 4.88s and 33s are close to real readings on the 62, a little under, actually. 34” Swampers were dead on.

My speedo reads 5mph slow compared to gps at 60mph. I am pretty sure this truck has factory gear ratios. I have a new cable but am saving that until I have another reason to open the dash. It does not bother me that much.

@CardinalFJ60 mine does the same thing.
