only issue with that is I'd then be buying tires for my other little skunkworks project here... which seems to be happy with the grey rims and Toyos for the moment. garage teaser:

tell us more of this skunkworks project!
looks like older hatch/doors, converted to tailgate on 75 and newer truck...still has holes for full length barn doors...

very intrigued!
btw love the white rims on the 82

Started fab on the rear bumper and clearanced the rear fenders. Need to add more bracing but general outline of the bumper is done. The fenders were already beat up from the trail and the shackle flip is more visible without them. I am not super in love with the bumper at this point but i am committed so might as well make the most of it.

Stopped the rust, painted, and made a custom hi-lift mount on an old Conferr rack I bought off another member

I LOVE their front bumpers! I wish they made one for the 80.

I think that they have the best functional/looking front bumpers in my opinion for Toyota 4x4's, I'm surprised that they don't have one for the 80 yet.

Changed my wheels on the Soarer. Put some staggered 18x8.5 18x9.5 ESR wheels on with General Gmax RS tires. The tires are really sticky, they pickup every rock on the road.

I'm about out of parts for the car so that means I have to work on the 80.

U joints took more effort than expected, but got them swapped on both axles. One had notceable cogging so I'm glad I did. Also made progress on the engine. Waiting for parts from the powdercoater and one last order (I hope) from overseas.

New brake pads all the way around on the 100 and rotated the tires. Did it out front on the crushed rock driveway with a few lingering mud holes. Bottle jacks and bricks. I'm getting too old for this sh!t. :hill:

One more solid day and it’ll be out.
Moving slow. Need to give momma time off from the kids most evenings.
Working by myself is slow too. I jump around a lot.

Finally fixed my rear locker that’s been on the fritz forever. Wasn’t really so bad once I got over being scared to tear into it!

Made a battery tray, and installed it in the engine bay of the '75 40. The old battery was stolen from the rear of the tub where it was residing...cut cables, and ties...

It's not where it's supposed to be, but is protected enough to stay safer from being snatched again until I start working on getting this one rebuilt.

Did you rebuild the actuator?

I took it all apart to its component pieces. Cleaned, degreased, and regreased everything. My problem was the shaft the gears spin on was seized in its bushing in the cover.

Rebuilt the rear prop shaft. Three new u-joints and a carrier bearing. Also a new tap and die for the middle yoke thanks to goobering threads getting that SOB carrier off.

Why Toyota decided to change the design on the 2nd gen Tacoma is beyond me but it stinks now. Have to remove the middle u-joint and there's no way to remove the carrier that I can see without destroying it. Also it appears they used 5/8"-18 threads and not M16-1.5 for the stake nut like I expected. So of course I didn't have the right one in the bin of extra nuts and seals and the dealer didn't stock the f'n $1.11 nut. Wouldn't be until Monday until they could get it. So I had to make a choice, red loctite on a regular nut or chase threads and reuse the stake nut. I went with reuse because it would be my luck a regular nut would either (a) back off or (2) unbalance the shaft.

Got it bolted back on last night so test drive this morning. Finger's crossed it solves the thump and bearing squeal without introducing a new out-of-balance.

The next time (hopefully) this shaft gets rebuilt it'll be by a shop anyway. The slip yoke splines are wearing out and there's no way to grease them without removing the rubber boot. Good thing, too, since there's so many yellow paint witness marks I doubt I could make heads or tails of the proper orientation of everything again.
