What have you done to your rig today?

Finished the dash pad covering. Real test will be how it handles sun exposure.

Firewall gasket was worn out! rubber flex joint was ok, but I sometimes get a knock feel at the steering wheel, so I figured I'd replace it. I had no idea of its condition.

Is that a special brown vinyl with which you covered the dash, or the sort of 'vinyl on a roll' sold at places like Hobby Lobby? I presume you full-contact glued it to the existing dash surface?

It's a marine vinyl I got online that's supposed to be uv resistant. Its glued to the existing vinyl. I sanded the existing vinyl first, then worked small sections at a time. I have enough to do a second dash if anyone wants the leftover materials.

Not my rig but did some exhaust welding. I'm terrible at tig but it should hold together. I'll have to do another in a couple months and I already am dreading it.

Stainless? You will have an easier time with a bigger cup and more Ar coverage, and backpurgng. Comes out bueno but uses a lot of gas.

That's on my list as well to replace at some point.

I was thinking about doing this to the 4runner dash. When you were done, did you think it was worth it? eBay has repro dashes for $150 or so.

Replaced O2 sensors and re-did one plug that was corroded and causing me grief...

Where do you get your connectcors? I had to re-do one of my knock sensor wires yesterday. I de-pined a connector from an old harness and spliced it into where needed.

Well, that is a bit of a story... I ordered the repair wire, but when it got here the wire was double the size of the original. So I thought I might be able to de-crimp the connector and reuse. Not one of my brightest ideas. That sent me down the deep dark hole of trying to find the connectors themselves. Which lead me to KSV Looms, who not only has a number of kits, but also had the pins I needed.

I will try to give you a call later today to talk the real estate stuff if that was clear as mud. :D

Yesterday I also:
  • Welded on the frame on the outside of the panhard bracket, a common stress fracture spot on 80s
  • Changed fan clutch oil and adjusted a bit to engage sooner (o-ring was fine)
  • replaced coolant
  • replaced PS fluid (partial)
  • adjusted master cylinder pushrod a bit closer
  • clamped off vacuum booster vac line to see if that would improve braking
  • chased down CEL and inoperable cruise control to a wire broken off a knock sensor.

This fix along with new spark plugs a few days ago and its like I have my old 80 back

I cleaned up all of my courtesy door switches on the PIG. The dome lights would only work when the driver door was open. Pretty simple to do. I found a video on YouTube that pretty much steps it out and this method works on all sorts of different model Toyotas.

That's cool. My method has been to raid them off the back doors of late model camrys every time I am at pick n pull. One thing I like about this is the ability to reassemble with dielectric grease to stop corrosion.

You can get most connectors (the plastic housing part) from Toyota, which I think you already know.

If you want to make up your own wires using terminals (the part you crimp on) and not use the repair pigtails there's sources for those. You can also get some of the connectors directly instead of Toyota. Although the housings are actually priced reasonably from Toyota. So if you just need that the dealer is fine. It's cheaper to buy a whole aftermarket connector kit compared to the connector and repair pigtails, though.

I get most of my stuff from Corsa-Technic. They are very helpful about trying to cross and stock OEM-equivalent parts so calling them on the phone is sometimes worth the time.

The majority of connectors are sealed or unsealed 090/090II/2.3II types. Interior connectors are sometimes 0.64/025 or 1.0/040 pitch and high current can be 187 series. But I bet 95% of the time what you're after is either a TS090/2.3II or HX040 connector.

Sumitomo:

Yazaki:

I've crossed a few Toyota part numbers to Sumitomo and Yakazi part numbers. If you can salvage the plastic part of the connector it's very likely you can find loose terminals.

Yep, on all fronts. I ordered the connectors from Toyota, as you said they are decently priced. The repair wire was also decently priced, but I was just concerned about the wire size difference.

Corsa was another site that I came across. I do not believe they had the specific Yazaki terminals I needed.

If you mean the actual contact then they do probably have them. If this is for your 80 I can probably look up the connector part number and see what the supplier part numbers might be. Just let me know.

They do, I found them when I was searching around. Just not as clear as KSV, at least to me. I have the Toyota Wire Harness manual, do you have another source / method for looking this stuff up?

Nope, same EWDs and the harness repair manual.
