My son and I tore down his replacement 1FZ over the weekend. This engine will be replacing the one in his 95 FZJ80 that burns a bit of oil and has a HG leak (coolant only). Head is going to Gunn. HG kit will be purchased from Cruiser Outfitters. Injectors will be cleaned by Fuel Injector Specialist. I need to make a list of all the misc. seals, gaskets, and belts that are not included in the HG kit. Maybe this time I'll actually create a spreadsheet with Toyota p/n's so I don't have to recreate the list each time. He is going to install ARP head bolts because he has dreams of a turbo in the future.

Install an S2 side light. Reinstalled fairing after putting on these Baja Desings OnX6 10” light bars the past two weekends, on a metal plate I made, which includes the new ham radio mount. Cleaned up some wiring.
Changed the oil, checked the tires, and packed for the pre-run.

Well, I wouldn’t say that I did all this today, but maybe the past few weeks. I decided to make a rear drawer system and sleeping platform for the 80. Not sure why I didn’t just buy one but here is the final version:

The sleeping platform is 80” long. And there is a front storage compartment that fits an AR 15 ;). With the drawers out I can lift it into the truck by myself. And the side pieces pop off using just super strong magnets.

Not yet. I found a smoking deal on a set of ARB drawers on marketplace, but they were in South Dakota.

Paid the bill for some engine work.... Steep but very reasonable! I finally get to pick the 80 up this weekend after having it in the shop all winter.

I was correct that the HG had just started to go on cylinder 1 at 234,000 miles.

- Complete top end rebuild
- Head machined and surfaced
- New timing chain, guides, and tensioner
- All leaks fixed
- Full cooling system refresh
- All new hoses
- New vacuum lines, EGR, and VSV.
- Exhaust leaks fixed
- Full tune up
- AC clutch fixed
- O2 sensors
- PS hoses

Ready to party for another 200k! Just in time for wheeling season.

I had my alternator repaired with new brushes and diodes a few weeks ago. It was original from 2001 and had 240k miles on it. Two of the three diodes were smoked. Good news, my 3 y/o battery is still good! While I had that area open up, I installed rivnuts to hold the arb air compressor mount under the battery. Bad news, I am still having an issue where the power drops while idling. My headlights dim, my hvac fan slows, and the dashlights dim. My draw should be no more than when everything was stock. I do have two lights, a winch, and the air compressor, but none of that is on when I'm driving down the road. Could these items be pulling power even in not turned on? It's annoying but I can deal with it. I do have LED projector headlights coming and am curious if the power fluctuation will cause them to strobe or do other weird stuff.

Possible poor battery cable ground someplace? And/or old cables in general? When the alternator failed on our 06 4Runner one of the ground cables was damaged.

Cables are probably original too. Ill check into that!

Assuming all cables etc are good then it could just be because of low RPM. LED headlights will draw less amps so that will help. Also you could replace the alternator pulley with an underdrive pulley so it spins faster at idle. Did that on my 100.

Has it always done this since you’ve owned it or is this new?

As soon as I tap the gas it goes back to normal light output. Maybe a smaller pulley is the answer!
My experience is that low voltage at idle is a less than optimal alternator. Chevy alt in LongCruiser can put out 122 of its 140 amps at idle. Denso Jag alt in 80 (rated at 140 amps) gives its full 13.4 regardless of RPMs. Since it was just worked on, cannot hurt to clean ground connections and check for corrosion. Wires make a big difference for voltage drop.

I noticed it about two years ago but can't say if it was that way prior. I would hope that I would have noticed it when I fist got it!
