Went down a giant rat-hole in the last 2 weeks:

  • Went to adjust the rear brakes on my '78 FJ40. Two adjusters are seized, so I replaced those.
  • While tapping on an adjuster, the brake shoe lining popped loose from the brake shoe body.
  • So, I then ordered and replaced the shoes and bled the system.
  • Now the brakes work well - after the 3rd pump. My 28+ year old master cylinder seems defective. Have one on order. I think bleeding the brakes killed the MC.

Oh, well - we all know how FJ40 brakes go. I'll admit that I haven't done much more than adjust them in 28 years of ownership.

BTW...this happened to me as well...turned out that I just hadn’t adjusted the wheel cylinders far enough so it took two to three pumps to get the pads pushed against the drums.

I didn’t want my 80 to get jealous with all the work on the new 40, so I fixed the fender flare I ripped off on Holy Cross 😉

Out with the old, in with the new! Installed the 199 Tundra brake upgrade on my 99 4Runner. Aftermarket calipers with OEM pads/shims and rotors. Night and day difference in braking power, and no more pulsation.

I have my front bumper on the saw horses! Got the turn signals installed and the fog lights in. Have my winch mocked up but the two bolts that go through the fairlead are too short. Today... get longer bolts. Any suggestions on where to pick up some solid hardware?

I swapped my Lil-B's front bumper for a Metal tech unit from a local dude. SSO rear is going on tomorrow, fresh powder coat was thrown on last Thursday.

I pulled the FJ60 out of my storage unit. Hadn't been started in 6 months, fired right up. :thumb: Ive been storing it Winters since moving to Iowa to save it from the salt, this Winter was particularly long though!

Finally took apart the egged out RR front spring hanger on the '78 FJ40 and discovered that the pin is shot, too. Poly bushings (installed in '91) were in good shape - this is just a function of 160K miles.

Made a 450 mile round trip to the Dunes and back with the 40 and the 80 last weekend. Kindof a big deal because that's the longest trip the FJ40 has been on in 10 years since I did Cruise Moab 2008. I don't think the Ghost Town Run in 2009 had quite the mileage, though it would have been close.

Last night got the rubbing compound out and tackled the oxidizing paint on the hood of the 80. The oxidation keeps coming back faster and faster so I think I'm going to have to do something drastic soon.

Was feeling a slight vibration in the driveline at 60+ mph when I took my foot off the gas, so I called Tom woods I bought a CV driveshaft. Picture was before I took the red caps off

I removed the 4 deg shims to point the rear diff at the Tcase

Drove it around on the highway and then rechecked the bolts. Can't really get a torque wrench on the tcase side so tightened as hard as I could by hand with a wrench. I know its supposed to be 65 lbs

That's a nicely made driveshaft. Curious about the slip yoke. My uncalibrated ruler to the screen method makes me think there isn't much length of splines engaged. I guess I don't know how deep are the engaged splines inside the yoke or if there's a risk of it separating. I assume the splines on the old one could be longer since there was more length inside the tube for them.
