curious, since you're the only one i know who has actual cross country experience. what kind of miles between charges and how long was the charging. as a commuter, ev interests me (60+ miles round trip daily), but i would also want it for family visits to idaho.

I used all Tesla Superchargers and let the on board nav/charging software figure out when to tell me to stop based on my driving. Looking back at my route, it looks like Newport to Baker was ~183 miles, Baker to Vegas was ~90 miles (I only stopped here because I wanted to check out the Strip doing covid - did not disappoint), Vegas to Beaver was ~226 miles (stayed the night here), Beaver to Green River was ~184 miles, Green River to Glenwood was ~186 miles, Glenwood to Arvada was ~155 miles.

I stopped to charge 5 times for 20-30 minutes each time, but if I planned slightly differently I could have stopped only 4 times. The entire trip was just over 1,000 miles, so if I was in the Cruiser I would have had to stop 3-4 times for fuel as well. I was alone for this trip, but usually on road trips I'm with my wife and our dogs which means any stop is typically 30 minutes or longer which means taking the Tesla would not have added any additional time to the trip generally speaking.

Here is the big caveat though. For most of the trip north out of Vegas, it was below freezing which is bad for range, and once you get to Utah, the speed limit increases to 80mph which is also bad for range. In order to not kill range, I sometimes had to set the Autopilot to 5-10mph under the speed limit which is annoying when you're driving one of the fastest cars on the road :ROFLMAO: . Slowing down a bit goes a long way to maintaining range though, and I truly enjoyed being able to relax, take in the scenery, and let the car do the driving.

I just realized I took a ton of pics from that trip but never shared them anywhere, so here are a few.

what's the deal with all the watermelons in Green River, anyway? I've always wondered that... do they grow there?

My wife works in finance in the telecom industry and she's currently working on a deal for Rivian's corporate broadband needs. Let's just say "they're not running a very tight ship," LOL.

Thanks for the trip report! I drive a Model 3SR and I've never taken it further than Cheyenne (I live in Arvada). I've only used the superchargers in an emergency (i.e. I forgot to plug in overnight). My buddy drove his new Model Y to moab a few weeks ago. I passed him in the Cruiser going through Frisco and he showed up to camp about two hours after me  But he's a slow driver and likes to stop at every starbucks

This is my first time seeing this thread, and I just caught up more or less.

I'm not really an advocate or detractor when it comes to the electric vs. ICE debate. Different strokes for different folks. I have both and they serve different purposes.

But just to add some more data points: for anyone who is self-employed or contractor and has a vehicle for business purposes, electric vehicles are the ultimate tax hack. You still write off the mileage the same as any other non-truck business vehicle (in my case, roughly 20k miles per year), but the operating costs are basically zero. I bought two tires because I have a RWD car and I don't rotate them (and sometimes drive like a teenager). I haven't even replaced my wipers yet. My electric bill went up between 10-20 per month and I'm in the Xcel windsource program.

I also payed $32,000 for my SR model 3 (the cheapest one money can buy) in 2019. I had them locate a vehicle that was used for test-drives at a dealership in Tempe, so it had about 800 miles, but no previous owners, downgrade the software from SR+ and was basically out the door for $31k and change. Then I got $8k in tax rebates, so if you take that into consideration, I paid $24,000 for my car. You can easily spend more than that on a Civic. And as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, I could turn around and sell it now with 40k miles for more than what I paid. I always laugh when people comment on my "fancy" car.

I've been more and more considering trying to get on the pre-order for the r1s. I don't use the 80 to its full potential much anymore and at about 8 mpg when towing the camper i'd probably be stopping less often than with the rivian. The price would be very hard to stomach though. But maybe all that torque and no altitude loss would make up for it a bit :) Even with installation of solar panels on the house I don't think primary driver would be cost savings though with solar panels installed and not a ton of miles every week, I think a majority of re-occuring costs would be covered.

Also in the back of my mind is that I think/hope within say 10 years we may hit a battery tech ramp where a replacement battery pack could potentially either be much cheaper or higher capacity when the original does degrage too much to be useful.

And on top of it seems like the r1s is the really only option for an electrical SUV that actually has some offroad capability. I guess I've got a year till that model really starts to roll out so will be interesting to see real world performance of the truck as it stands with regular driving, offroad, and towing. If with a small trailer I could get 200 miles out of the 400 mile battery pack at 60mph I think that would put me in the ballpark of being happy with the range. Of course still not as adaptable as an ICE vehicle, but maybe close enough.

Oh and I just noticed that the "offroad" option comes out to a 34x11 tire which would be cool. 20" rim less so, but for a stock size tire a narrow 34 would be nice!

I wonder why they decided to go with 4G instead of 5G for the onboard hotspot.

Has anyone seen one of these in person? I know their "road show" was delayed but wondering if they have started that up again. I can't wait to see one/ride in one/drive one.

I'm excited about the F150 Lightning EV and think this competition is great for the industry and benefits the consumer greatly. I will caution about the "price" however. It's true the absolute base model truck with an estimated 230 mile range is currently advertised at ~$40k, but look at the image below for the full story which shows it will go up to over $90k for the 300 mile range version. That is quite the spread, and I am confident they will not be rushing to build the $40k version because there is no margin in it at that price point.

When Tesla unveiled the Model 3 in 2016 as a "$35k car", they started delivering the most expensive models first (roughly double $), and they only sold a very small number of the $35k cars because they weren't making any money on them. They quickly pulled the cheapest model off the market saying no one wanted it, but analysts pointed to margin rather than demand for the reason. Now the cheapest model Tesla sells 5 years after the 3 launch is $40k with no federal tax rebate, so it makes sense Ford will not be rushing to sell $40k EV F150s and will instead likely focus on the margin friendly more expensive models that fall right in line with the Rivian price. Also keep in mind the Rivian is more performance oriented with more range, much faster acceleration, and was designed with off road prowess at the top of the list whereas the Ford is more of a traditional pickup.

Has anyone been following the Lordstown Motors Endurance? They seem to be hitting some bumps in the road. If they can get their feet under them, it seems like they will have a cost competing truck line... if they can get their 💩 in a pile!

Cool! I think this picture shows how big it really is....compared dimensions to an 80 the rivian is a bit bigger. To me it appears to be a smaller vehicle on their webpage pictures for some reason...maybe no other vehicles to compare to. Do you happen to know if the one you saw had the "offroad" package/wheels or if it was the street version?

but the operating costs are basically zero.

Depreciation is surely an 'operating cost'....

Here's a question - has anyone seen a Tesla with 250K miles on it? How are the ball joints, struts, control arms, brake pads (even with regen)? What would a boned out Tesla with bad paint be worth?

If you pay $30-50K and drive the heck out of it, it will one day end up with little residual value, just like an old Camry.

Tesla high mileage leader board.

Looks like they moved it to an app. I have looked at it a few times, lots of miles on some of them.

There was a German dude with 550k+ on an original P85, more recent article says he's coming up on 700k or something now? Had a battery pack replacement by Tesla it sounds like.

Cool! I think this picture shows how big it really is....compared dimensions to an 80 the rivian is a bit bigger. To me it appears to be a smaller vehicle on their webpage pictures for some reason...maybe no other vehicles to compare to. Especially since Matt is 6'4"!

Haha no I was not aware of that :) Very cool! That puts it even more perspective.

Hows the interior Matt size wise for tall folk? I'm also 6'4. Bringing one of the R1S's to Central Oregon any time soon? Large network of charging stations here and you could hit up the East Oregon Desert & Badlands on the way ;)

I put down a pre-order on one of the R1S's and hoping that there is the large battery pack avail by the time I our ticket comes up in a year or so.
