curious, since you're the only one i know who has actual cross country experience. what kind of miles between charges and how long was the charging. as a commuter, ev interests me (60+ miles round trip daily), but i would also want it for family visits to idaho.
I used all Tesla Superchargers and let the on board nav/charging software figure out when to tell me to stop based on my driving. Looking back at my route, it looks like Newport to Baker was ~183 miles, Baker to Vegas was ~90 miles (I only stopped here because I wanted to check out the Strip doing covid - did not disappoint), Vegas to Beaver was ~226 miles (stayed the night here), Beaver to Green River was ~184 miles, Green River to Glenwood was ~186 miles, Glenwood to Arvada was ~155 miles.
I stopped to charge 5 times for 20-30 minutes each time, but if I planned slightly differently I could have stopped only 4 times. The entire trip was just over 1,000 miles, so if I was in the Cruiser I would have had to stop 3-4 times for fuel as well. I was alone for this trip, but usually on road trips I'm with my wife and our dogs which means any stop is typically 30 minutes or longer which means taking the Tesla would not have added any additional time to the trip generally speaking.
Here is the big caveat though. For most of the trip north out of Vegas, it was below freezing which is bad for range, and once you get to Utah, the speed limit increases to 80mph which is also bad for range. In order to not kill range, I sometimes had to set the Autopilot to 5-10mph under the speed limit which is annoying when you're driving one of the fastest cars on the road . Slowing down a bit goes a long way to maintaining range though, and I truly enjoyed being able to relax, take in the scenery, and let the car do the driving.
I just realized I took a ton of pics from that trip but never shared them anywhere, so here are a few.
This is literally all I took with me when I moved - priorities!
I wonder what I was doing here
Modified the trip plan so I could charge here and walk the Strip when there were no humans around on a Saturday night
Again, this is Saturday night
This person didn't stop when their car told them to
Charging was lonely because of covid
Only the essentials
