I think that Subaru is pretty rad. It's not that over the top, it's kind of rally cool. Plus it's different. Not just another brand new 4Runner or Wrangler hit with a huge money grenade. It seem pretty ideal for users who just need enough to get to trailheads on marginal roads. Kind of the philosophical opposite to a mall terrain rated crawler that barely ever needs low range but looks ready to drive across Africa. That 'Roo will get 99% of places a built anything will, anywhere short of needing real low range. It's pretty amazing when an inch or so of lift and good skid plates will do for a Forester or Outback. Plus they have a real spare tire (major props for thinking about that to the owner) and have a pretty good way to make it work on these cars.

Don’t forget about the rotopax extra fuel to get to the trailhead on marginal roads!

I’d own it but you gotta admit it’s got some money grenade poser to it

I'm a huge fan of Subarus, we own 2 currently.

But I'm not a fan of building one to that point. Without a low range there is no point IMHO. Yah you could nurse it around the alpine loop but that auto trans is going to hate you grinding up the high altitude steep grades.

Little lift, RTT and/or awning sure. Tire carrier, fuel cans, tube bumpers not so much. I do admit to looking at the Warn winch bumper for our outback. Without the hoop. But no point really. I own a Cruiser for that adventure.

This can carrier made me go, "what"? Brilliant design. Covers the license plate and is just high enough that a rear end collision would be very exciting.......and.....I knew brand new 4runners got poor gas mileage but not that bad.

That reminds me of back in the '70s seeing people attach Jerry can holders to the sides of their 40s. First narrow section of trees and rip, off came the can and holder. Some people have to learn the hard way.

I have to smile at the jab regarding the Crosstrek.....heck, they're so darn popular in Boulder right now if you park in the Costco lot you may have to honk the alarm horn to figure out which one is yours because there's 5 identical ones parked next to each other! Every third vehicle seems to be a Crosstrek! Anyway, I got to say they are a heck of a deal for what you get. I special ordered this one for my wife as her mountain car. I ordered it with the 2.0, 6 spd manual and non of the nanny systems and I got to say it's a hell of a AWD in the mountains for $22k cash. Im in KC right now with it and it cruised the 800 miles at 85mph across Kansas on 2 tanks of gas or approx 30+ mpg. As for building it out as an overlander ......most likely not since it's the wifes car but I'm so smitten with it I've actually talked about finding a used one to do exactly that! Tough little car! (btw, the whole headgasket thing is a thing of the past, fwiw.)

I've been seriously considering ordering one to replace my hot hatch daily driver. Used CrossTreks are going for more than MSRP new ones out here in Cali. It's nuts!

People used to wheel 40s?
Yes, and then they/we wised up to the fact that wagons are just as fun and waaay more comfortable. Back in the 70s I was young and dumb and found wheeling 40s to be the ultimate freedom.

Ha, yeah, if there's one reason to build a Subaru it's 'cause you shouldn't need so friggin' much gas.
I’d own it but you gotta admit it’s got some money grenade poser to it
I get ya but honestly it doesn't look any less flashy than something like a 200 that comes out of Christo's shop. It's kind of hard not to look poser when a brand new anything gets the full work up, though. At least until its first dent. But then again I guess I'm a curmudgeon who feels that if you can actually remember the last time you gave your truck a coat of wax and a vacuum then it's maybe borderline.

OTOH, I gotta be honest, even though it lacks low range we (or I should say *I*) push our Forester harder than it has any right to do. I'd have sliders on the sled if she'd let me. But it's a stick shift and I 100% bet that makes a difference. Like @Corbet says, the CVT is pure shite. Only having IFS could possibly be a worse kick in the nards.

Or when you're in the Utah desert and there are no trees.

sucks when the tree isn't nearly as strong as it looks...

LOL......That's truth and smart to look at products from a product liability angle......Can't imagine the language in the civil lawsuit papers!
