Corona Virus Panic

I'm watching my FB feed today seeing people I know who live up in the SF Bay area driving down to Monterey (where I live) to do stuff in the name of exercise here. Sounds pretty much like y'all are having the same stories in a lot of the mountain towns in Colorado. It's really disappointing to me how so many people I know just don't take their civic duty seriously. If they can't even stay home work a weekend or two, then I imagine they probably also don't wash their hands. Gross.

My wife has family in Italy and it is crazy to hear how bad it is there. She (family member) has herself witnessed elderly people being turned away from hospitals in favor of them treating younger people that are more likely to recover. Regardless of stats on whether it is overblown or not, I can't imagine getting to the point where my grandmother is being turned away from a hospital because they know they can only save so many and have to pick the best likely to survive.

My dad is in South Carolina. He has an infected Knee Replacement, which will likely lead to sepsis, but he is being told that hospital protocol has changed and that he does not qualify for surgery as all hospital resources are being readied for covid19. Triage is already happening folks. :(

I have a family member and two people I work with have told me similar stories. They think they have COVID-19. They have the symptoms and called to get tested and they were told unless your sick enough to be admitted to the hospital, you cant get tested. They all are self quarantining at home. I understand the health care system is overwhelmed. Just saying the numbers of infected are off if they are only going by the test

According to the press conference yesterday, 95% of COVID19 tests done so far in the USA have come back negative. And these are people sick enough to go to the hospital. Really, what are they going to do? If you need to go to the hospital, go. If you don't, then you should already be isolating as much as possible, which is what they'd tell you to do anyway if you were tested positive.

My daughter and her husband took a drive downtown tonight to see what was going on. Bars and restaurants are boarding up the windows to protect the inventory inside. Scary scene there indeed

So they turned away your dad, who sounds like he has an actual issue to save space for potential use or are the beds already full?

The Chinese found that sepsis has been the most common complication, so it seems like if that's what your dad is experiencing then perhaps they should be ready to treat it anyway.

Sounds like they might be deeming this an elective surgery. I actually got an email yesterday about my dentist closing down because what they do is considered elective. @MDH33 Could you make the case that it falls into item number 2 below. It does seem like it could cause a disfunction if it doesn't heal well.

Email is below:

To our Valued Patients,

On March 19th, Governor Polis issued an executive order effectively closing our office until at least April 14th. Our state is anticipating a large influx of hospitalizations due to the community spread of COVID-19 and it will be necessary to conserve PPE and other medical equipment for patients and providers directly affected with the virus. Below is a summary of the email received by the Colorado Dental Association.

" As of 12:01 A.M. on March 23, 2020, all voluntary or elective surgeries or procedures, whether medical, dental, or veterinary, are suspended in the State of Colorado until April 14, 2020 at the earliest.

Surgeries or procedures are permitted when there is:
  1. A threat to the patient's life
  2. A threat of permanent dysfunction to an extremity or organ system
  3. A risk of metastasis or progression of staging of a disease or condition or
  4. A risk that the patient's condition will rapidly deteriorate if the procedure or surgery is not performed.

If you have any non-emergent or dental hygiene appointments scheduled with our office between March 23rd through April 14th, we encourage you to email or call our office to reschedule as soon as possible. Our staff will have remote access to our system during this time and will be able to communicate via email. If you prefer to call in order to reschedule your appointment, please be patient with us. Our phone system will be monitored on a fairly limited basis. We understand the inconvenience that this closure will cause our patients and we will do our best to accommodate all patients needing to be rescheduled as quickly as we are able. The circumstances are rapidly developing and changing so we will continue to keep you informed of any changes with this closure. We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this difficult time and wish you all good health and wellness.

Sincerely,

4th Avenue Family Dentistry

In the next week my suspicion is that someone that is commenting will have news of knowing someone close to you, or you yourself being faced with knowing you probably have COVID-19. While this is just a guess, the rate at which this decease is effecting people's life is incredible. I appreciate everyone that is taking the time to post on here. I've enjoyed this thread quite a bit! Stay safe!

Couple of interesting developments on outdoor recreation:

- All the ski resorts have closed down, so now the back country ski/snowboard stores are swamped and some busier than they have ever been. Most of the ski resorts normally allow uphill access via skinning if the resorts are closed, but now most have shut that down because too many people have shown up. Per this article, hundreds of people showed up to A Basin the day after they shut down the lifts. My biggest worry is that a bunch of people will head to the back country without the proper knowledge and training for avalanche awareness.

- Department of the Interior waived entrance fees to the national parks. "National Parks are suspending entrance fees so people can 'enjoy the outdoors' "
So everyone is flooding the National Parks to the point where they are overcrowded and understaffed.
https://slate.com/technology/2020/03/national-parks-are-staying-open-is-that-safe.html

Mayor of Estes Park asked Rocky Mountain National Park to close because Estes was getting overrun with tourists.

On a positive note, I can now get takeout booze from my local dine-in restaurants that have converted to curbside pick up!

Big Bend National Park in Texas just cancelled all overnight camping in the park and is only open during the day now. Little frustrating since I was heading there this week.

We got out for some ski touring up on Grand Mesa yesterday. Powderhorn closed their base and parking lots but the mountain is still open to uphill traffic if you want to walk in. There's a USFS lot at the old ski area that backcountry users and sledders have typically parked and it was about as busy as any other winter weekend. Nothing like what Mayor Parker the Snow Dog shows in that video, though.

I forget if I already mentioned it in this thread but the grandfather of one of my friends from high school tested positive in the last few days. He lives in a senior community in my hometown. He's doing well after a short stint in the hospital as of yesterday. But if he has it, I'm sure the whole senior community has it or will soon.

Yosemite is fully closed out here: https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/03/20/coronavirus-yosemite-national-park-closes/

Too many people being covidiots and flooding the park. I'm sure other parks will follow suit if people keep bum-rushing the parks and not following social distancing rules.

A bunch of the coastal towns out west are having real issues, too. For instance, Warrenton, Oregon is forcing a hoard of tourists out from town: https://www.statesmanjournal.com/st...tourists-out-coronavirus-covid-19/2893827001/ And I've seen people I know living in a variety of smaller communities in the northwest begging everyone to leave who doesn't live there full-time.

Down here in Monterey I've seen some photos from friends on my Insta feed of overflowing crowds at a few of the state parks. It seems people aren't taking it too seriously right now.

--------
Edit: When all of this is over, I'm going to need a long vacation.

That's probably very scary for the people that live there. What state is that in?

Seeing this shows that people have no concern for others or the communities they travel to. I have to say that when this is all over and we are looking back at this situation, it will be very interesting on how I interpret the government, how I interpret society, and western values as a whole. That isn't to say that I'm against any of these things, but I must say that I'm journaling some of my thoughts day to day so I can track my own thoughts. I have been completely taken aback at the misinformation people choose to listen to, how they justify what they will do and won't do. In short, humans are worse than cats.

It's in Oregon. And yeah I'm sure it's not a great feeling to live in a vulnerable community where it might be spreading around. The hospital in my hometown is small but good. But it couldn't withstand a big surge.

Meow I guess. I was buying cat food the other day and I told the lady behind me that since there was no human food left I was starting to fatten up the cats. Made her kid cry. Wrong crowd for dark sarcasm I suppose.
