Getting excited for the run.

Thought,

Think it would be fun head into Chama one evening and check out/photograph the train yard as well as the town. Night shots of the trains warming up make for some fun images:cool:. Don't know if there's any better evening but something to think about. Heck, maybe we could get a tour of the shop......:bowdown:......

:beer::beer:

Sounds good.

Are we getting reservations for the train? How do the ticket purchases work?

Right on. I'll plan on rolling into Denver Tuesday sometime.

Got a minute or two for a brew or three in Denver? :thumb: Lot's of new brewpubs with some being worth the price of admission in your old NW Denver neighborhood. Be good to see you.
If not, welcome back to the hills and have a great time while you are here.

Dan will be setting up the group reservation shortly for when we ride the train on Friday. Once he gets that set up, all you'll need to do is call in with the reservation number and get a seat.

I've been following this thread for a while and wondered if there is room for another rig? I'm a member of Colorado Land Cruisers and have met several rising sun members at get together and TLCA events. It would be my wife and I. Sounds great !

There most certainly is! Come along for sure!

I will set up a reservation sometime in the next two days when I have some time to kill in a hotel with internet. ;)

The nice thing about the C&TS is that they typically just add more cars if they are filling up the train, and going on a friday means we will probably have about a full car to ourselves...

The reservation is started.

The way this works is that you call the C&TS and add yourself to my reservation. This is what will give us all tickets in the same car (although if the weather is nice we will spend almost the entire day in the open car).

Here's the Reservation info:
Name: Daniel Silbaugh
Reservation Number: 1272521
October 7, 2016, Excursion #1
(Antonito to Chama by bus, return by train)

Post up as you add yourself, if you don't mind.

*****The direction we ride might change--but I'll take care of that if it does******
Just a bit of further info on the day's schedule--it's a long day, but not strenuous by any means. We will feel pretty beat at the end of it, but that's mostly from how awesome it is.
We will need to leave our campsite by 7:45AM to drive to Antonito. We can definitely carpool a bit here. The bus will take us to Chama, and we will then ride the train from Chama all the way to Antonito--and be back at camp by 5:30 for dinner. Lunch at Osier is provided with the train ticket, and it's a decent lunch. Buffet style, and very filling.

This lets us end the day really close to camp, and ride the train up Cumbres Pass--which is pretty incredible. It's one of the most amazing things to see a machine pull a train up that grade.
****disclaimer--the direction we ride might change, but I will take care of that if it does. Either way we will be returned to our vehicles and we won't be too terribly far from dinner and camp when the day ends*****

We are just doing the coach seats, which are roughly $100/person for adults--although we rarely spend much time sitting in those seats. If the cost of a ticket is too much for anyone thinking of coming, don't let that deter you. While we ride the train you could explore Chama, or just hang out in camp, or meet us for lunch at Osier. No big deal.

+1 added to the reservation. Can't wait for this. Anyone know when they will be heading down? Again I've got the whole week in the calendar and would love to bum around in the area. Some places I had in mind are the Saguache area and Mills Canyon.

How soon do we need to add ourselves to your reservation? I'm waiting for one thing at work before we're 100%.

You could probably do it the day of.

...but to be on the safe side maybe two days before the trip. The railroad will typically add cars if they get full enough.

If they got REALLY full (and we got REALLY lucky) we'd see a train with three locomotives pulling it. That hasn't happened for a very, very long time IIRC.

It is quite the sight to see, and sound to hear. Three locomotives tugging up a 4% grade...

Depends on when you will arrive.

Plan on our campsite. Which is about 1 hour from Chama, maybe 30 minutes from Antonito. Right by Sublette on the line.

I'm planning on going early to establish our site and claim it early, in case other folks are up there. Also, because I need to get out and it's a great place to hang out.

Dan

Apologies if I am overlooking the obvious, but where are we camping? Between Antonito and Chama from what I gather here.

I think I can only get the boy out of school Thursday and Friday, as he missed a few days this week (sick). So we would head out Thursday and get in Thursday PM.

We are camping in the same spot the entire time? Debating about the pop-up vs. tent camping.

Any problems skipping the canyon? It does not sound stock-Pig friendly...

Thanks!
