@Yota_addict Electric City at 72nd & Lowell. Eric knows his way around vintage stuff.

It could be as simple as a stretched belt. Then again if it's older, it was made for 110V, not our current 120V. If that's the case, mis-sizing the belt on purpose can counteract that.

Thanks! Most Duals are actually pretty unique in that they don’t use a belt or direct drive. It’s an idler pulley that runs the table. The drawbacks are that these turntables require a bit more skill to to get em perfect. I’ve got 3 turntables and so far this one sounds the best. I’m guessing it’s the Shure cartridge. The auto start works but soon after stops and returns. The manual works as it should. It’s mostly mechanical so could use some tweaking or maybe worn out bushings. I’ll check out electric city and see what they know about these things.

This ought to tick a few boxes. Not sure if those are like or dislike buttons. It's the closest I could think of a Nada Surf song that might be tolerable to @DomOfTheDead.

The rest of the album, well, there's a few OK. Like Aimee Mann, The Eyelids or William Tyler. Most of it is emo and there's a few disappointments, like The Texas Gentlemen, who I usually like had a solidly meh contribution. For the most part a forgettable album of covers unless you're a super fan.

So, speaking of that...

There's a thread just for vinyl that might get a different set of viewers. @Hulk has (or had) a Dual. Although he's a contributor here, too.

I can't really offer any advice other than maybe call Gold Sound on south Broadway if they're still around. They sell used equipment and might known of techs who can help.

I second @Cruisertrash's suggestion of Electric City. Old school gearheads that have the ability to take care of an old Dual. Personally, I wouldn't spend money on a table of that vintage that wasn't that good to begin with, if you are somewhat serious about sound quality. For old school chic, however, and old Dual has that in spades.

@DaveInDenver For what it’s worth the guy at Gold Sound has always rubbed me the wrong way. They always have really cool stuff in there, and the guy is clearly knowledgeable, but I’ve always gotten the impression that if you’re not there to drop $1000+++ then you’re not worth his time. That might just be my experience though. On the other hand Eric and Mindy (I think that’s her name) at Electric City, their eyes will light up and they’ll strike up a conversation if you bring in some trash piece of gear, simply because it might be vintage, rare, oddball, or just cool. I don’t know the staff techs there anymore, but Eric in particular is super knowledgeable on all old hifi stuff.

Oh, I'm not suggesting the place you recommend isn't better. Never heard of them, they sound cool. It's been a decade since I left Denver and I think 15 years now since I've even been in Gold Sound, so my memory could very well be fuzzy.

I first went in there around 2003, shortly after graduating from engineering school and flush with wads of cash after getting a job. They auditioned and recommended the Pro-Ject Debut even after I originally had asked for an MMF that was twice the price. At the time I'd never even heard of Pro-Ject. I probably should have gone wih the MMF since I've changed or modified just about everything on my TT.

Later I ended up grabbing an Adcom GFA-535 mk2 from their used stash. When I was looking for speakers I had no idea what I wanted and walked out with Paradigm Mini Monitors, about the lowest junk on their price sheet.

I got kind of the opposite feeling, that they were not a top tier audio shop so didn't push too hard. But it's probably they were just good salespeople and recognized I wasn't in the league where I could drop much money.

It’s definitely not the turntable to write home about or throw mass dollars at but I always like saving these old things and having them work like they should. I definitely prefer the old stuff over new.

Thanks all for the help. There’s a local shop near me I may take it to. I’ll probably just pull the motor and clean and oil it first to see if that the issue.

Well I took the motor apart and oiled the bearings and realized putting back together I could adjust the brass cone pictured that runs the idler and was able to get the speed right. Also got all the automatic turntable functions back and working. Feel free to move this post to the appropriate place thanks again

Well done. Were you able to source a new idler wheel? A new drive wheel will be the best audible update you can make to the piece. Readily available, I believe.

The idler rubber is soft. It looks like someone replaced it at some point. Someone buggered up the top screw on it so definitely been messed with. I found a company that makes new ones up in Canada. May get it in the future

Look up child, the world is born
Shoe's untied, and your soles are worn
Windows are rolled down
Sun is setting high
Windows are rolled down
I'm fixin' to die
Corn rows have companion feel
This rocky road and this steering wheel
Who do you call to ease your pain?
I hope for you to get through this rain
Windows are rolled down
Moon is hanging low
Windows are rolled down
Think it's time for me to go,

That’s a nice heavyweight Sundazed reissue Steve.

Like the Velvet Underground, and I’ll paraphrase here, they didn’t have much success in their time, but everyone who heard them went on to form bands. Even if that’s only true for one person, that person is me. At 14 I switched from drums to guitar because of Brother Wayne.

If there’s an afterlife I sure hope Wayne gets his chance to play with Rob, Sonic, and the boys again. And I’m sure they’ll play loud. Heck, maybe he’d even bump into Johnny Thunders and they could resurrect their short lived duo project Gang War.
