@DaveInDenver The work Alan Lomax did can never be overstated. The concept of “American music” essentially owes all praise to Lomax.

Here’s my favorite Sam Chatmon video:

Hard to say.

Sure, yes of course Alan (and to give full credit his father, John, as well) Lomax.

But Ralph Peer and his remote recordings. For my money he's the guy.

Hat tip to Don Law, Art Satherley and especially Ernie Oertle. Everyone knows why them.

Not to forget Richard Jones and Clarence Williams at OKeh.

And George Hay and his WSM Barn Dance.

It's impossible to read, listen, watch or digest it all.

"Pedestrian at Best"
Courtney Barnett
Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit (2015)

I love you, I hate you, I'm on the fence, it all depends
Whether I'm up or down, I'm on the mend, transcending all reality
I like you, despise you, admire you
What are we gonna do when everything all falls through?
I must confess, I've made a mess of what should be a small success
But I digress, at least I've tried my very best, I guess
This, that, the other, why even bother?
It won't be with me on my deathbed, but I'll still be in your head

@DaveInDenver those first two albums she put out are pretty dang good. I’ve said it before but there’s tons of cool stuff coming out of Australia the last decade or so.

Been digging on yet another Aussie. Kind of Courtney Barnett meets Liz Phair.

I respect anyone who covers The Bottlerockets (really, that puts you in the John Hiatt orbit), Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle. Plus they're local to Boulder. Heck yeah! I'm not sure if it's intentional channeling Dolly Parton and Dwight Yoakam with "Two Doors Down" but I like it either way.

Listening to a show called "Studio B" that's hosted by a dude named Dave W. Phillips and is broadcast on a station here in GJ, KWSI 100.3. The show is on Friday nights but it's not real clear to me who it is or where it's coming from originally. But to, no doubt, the delight of @Hulk it's pretty much Pitchfork but even more obscure indie music.

Anyway, I liked a couple and was able to find them on Youtube, so here you go.

It first came to my attention that bluegrass bands were covering Nirvana when I went to a show at Cervantes way back in November 2017.

That Pickin' On Nirvana was made of Colorado bluegrass bands.

Frank Wott (Big Time Rascals) on doghouse bass
John Bush (Burn It Blue) on guitar
Chris Elliott (Ragged Union) on banjo
Jess Rose Moidel (Shaky Hand String Band) on fiddle
Steven Homan (Big Time Rascals) on drums

To my surprise there was another band who did a real record of Nirvana songs. These guys, Iron Horse, come from, where else, but Muscle Shoals (technically from Killen), Alabama.

In this version Iron Horse
Vance Henry (guitar)
Anthony Richardson (banjo)
Ricky Rogers (bass)
Tony Robertson (mandolin)

I'd like to credit the drums but I'm not sure who is playing here. Sorry Mr. (Seriously?) A Drummer In A Bluegrass Band Guy.

FWIW, a few props to the local guys.

Rueben's Train is very old American folk song, probably from the 19th century but the first known recording was perhaps 1905 and it's a staple covered to this day by old tyme, bluegrass, country and many others. Billy Strings does it a lot.

This is the whole show. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned Ragged Union before.

More beer, bluegrass and Nirvana.

You old timers, recognize this perhaps since Thin Lizzy covered this song, which is an old Irish folk song. The Dead and The Dubliners did it, Metallic did, too. U2 and The Pogues have also. This version is much closer to the Phil Lynott version than the traditional one, though.

@DaveInDenver Speaking of bluegrass - and as I sit in the parking lot of King Sooper with the dog while Karen grabs camping supplies - I just found out my buddy Martin Gilmore won the songwriter’s contest at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Couldn’t have happened to a more talented, nicer guy.

Here he is covering Bill Monroe
