Long time lurker. First time poster.
Something drew me to click that 808 movie. I look forward to watching it all later.
I was in public High School in Manhattan from 83-87. I took the subway from Queens every day. I was not so cool as to be in that music scene or go to Studio 54. I regret never going to CBGB. But I did make it a few places they should never have let me into, and parties around the Village, Soho, etc. had the music. You could drop me into any one of those sidewalk or subway scenes. It was a pretty awesome HS experience.
Now I see I need some of you to help me build a LongCruiser soundtrack. How sick would it be if LongCruiser had turntabl

Something you might have been hearing at that time, Daniel:

This 12” single and the complete album “Welcome To The Pleasuredome” will be on the turntable tonight. I’ll have to look into the movie.

Don’t know the band but I do know the Stanley is a great venue for all kinds of music. 👍
You may know them tangentially and not realize it. I'm pretty certain you've had some of Nathaniel Miller's beers and been to the brewery, @Groucho named Big Choice Brewing after them as a long time fan and there was plenty of them in the background music rotation. If memory serves it helped him to meet the band.

Several thoughts after watching the above video. The Stanley venue is going to get very loud as it might be a little small for the band’s style. Bigger than the High Dive, I’m guessing, but it’s not that big. Dean would have liked the band. Tangentially is as close as I need to know them. 😜😎

Haha. They are all old now and will be playing an acoustic set Saturday night after the regular show. I do enjoy the fast paced of their music but won’t be jumping into any mosh pits anytime soon. They are one of those bands I just never got to see in my youth so would be nice to catch their show.

Maturing (getting older) does have its place. Definitely better than the alternative. Have a great experience and hold your memories close. As Simon and Garfunkel said eons ago, they (memories) are all we are left with. As a friend is fond of saying “I’m still kicking, just not as high”.

"And Am I Born To Die"
Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn
Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn (2014)

This is originally a hymn by Charles Wesley.

However, Doc Watson and Gaither Carlton are generally credited with this arrangement. Billy Strings often sings this and did so in fact at Red Rocks during his May 12, 2022 show.

I thought this version with a female voice felt reassuring today. It doesn't really show their playing talents (both are incredible pickers), though it's a little different feel using banjo accompaniment instead of a fiddle or simply a cappella as is tradition and Abigail sure can sing.

And am I born to die?
To lay this body down
And must my trembling spirit fly
Into a world unknown?

Soon as from earth I go
What will become of me?
Eternal happiness or woe?
What shall my portion be?

A land of deepest shade
Unpierced by human thought
The dreary regions of the dead
Where all things are forgot

And am I born to die
To lay this body down?
And must my trembling spirit fly
Into a world unknown?

The #1 single each week of the 1980s.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_number-one_singles

OK, yeah, pure sappy pop peppered with a few interesting songs. It's like a bad dream, the playlist of KHTR in 1980s St. Louis. Yikes. Or more like ugh.

But what struck me is how you could almost see milestones like MTV launching (August 1, 1981), the week that saw a new of John Hughes or other movies or when a high profile act got pushed from a major label. Obvious why there just had to be garage bands, then punk, hip hop or later alternatives to mind numbing pop culture.

For Gen X'ers, the 1990s list to continue the jogging of memory.

Also, like MTV's obvious taking hit making from radio, you can start to see how downloading MP3s (1995ish) and Napster (1999) start to make an impact in what comes into the wide consciousness, taking influence away from movie and record companies and even MTV.

If you have 2+ hours this is every #1 from 1958 to March 4, 2023...

Johnny Cash had a reoccurring guest cameo role playing a character named Kid Cole on the show "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" and sang a song titled "Thanksgiving Prayer" in season 2. The character was a reformed gunslinger turned sheriff and, in fact, June Carter played a love interest character named Sister Ruth a couple times opposite him.

The star of the show was Jane Seymor. She and Johnny became friends and her son John Stacy (with James Keach, her husband at the time in 1995) is named after Johnny. John's twin brother is named Kristopher after another friend, Christopher Reeves.

And to further this little yarn, James Keach would later produce Walk The Line in 2005, the bio-pic about Johnny and June that starred Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon.

I don't think this video has been posted. That's a slight oversight on behalf of pop music that doesn't suck like whatshername raking in billions.

As one comment says, "This song is so effortlessly cool I'd be too nervous to talk to it at a party"
