I'm trying to get nothing but clean metal in this tub before I get it shot with Line-X. The original rust magnet design of these really sucked. One more thing off the list..
Yeah, and I'm going to wrap the rear corners with DP as well as the area around the vents in the front of the tub. No rust there, but I want to strenthen them and shoot them with the Line-X. Think I'm going to make rear fendor flares out of DP as well since the tub was butchered there before I got it and the ABS flares don't do much for me as far as durability. The cost of steel has gone through the roof, i've go more than $300 into a 4 by 12 foot of 14 GA HRS DP.
just be sure to coat the steel well before you put the dp on. i've always coated in undercoating and put the dp on while it's still wet to create a seal.
I welded a scab plate to the tub behind the fender extension that is drilled and tapped so they can be removed and replaced as necessary. I also welded the DP corners on and blended with the fender scab plate with a skim coat of filler.
Next time I do one of these I'll use something thinner than 14 GA DP, forming the corner radius was really tough, but at least I won't have to worry about denting them when backing up in the brush. And they give a nice secure mount for the tire carrier. The DP will be shot with black Line-X, and the rest of the tub with Yellow.
