I also have the Nitro 4.88 in my truck. When running 34-35" tires they are great. They only downside is the higher RPMs at highway speeds. My speedo is still about 5% high with 35" tires. I don't know what makes the bigger difference, the gearing or the super charger. I wonder if the Nitro gears are stronger than the Toyota gears.
I stumbled on a thread on Mud where people have been having some bad experiences with Nitro over the last year. I didn’t realize Nitro was sold and is being operated by a different parent company now.

Oh, and I don’t think it matters how strong gears are with Andy. I’m convinced he thinks he’s running KOH every time he touches dirt. 😉😘

JT Parts/Nitro/Justdifferentials is part of DPI Offroad, which is the parent of Daystar, Tuff Country, Toytec. Which is itself owned by an investment holding company called Dubin Clark.

But that just happened in 2021 so can't think they changed process/suppliers that quick. Probably has nothing to do with our young Andrew's heavy right foot anyway as his issues pre-date the buy-out.

Did the things that a dummy like me can do on my 80. Added single BH3D cup holder, wits end useless cubby insert, LED replacement for interior, magnet fix for droopy visor, new lift support struts for hood and tailgate, and most impressively the epoxy bracket trick for the shaky passenger mirror! Drop it off tomorrow at the Toy shop for front axle work and preventative maintenance on the 292k engine. Then off to Slee later in the month for sliders, shortbus bumper and come-up 9.5RS winch, rear ARB locker, 2.5” OME lift and shocks kit. Once I get it back, will remove the trailer hitch and mount trail tailor recovery points to rear of truck. Should be getting Marathon seat covers delivered by early April for front seats. Will then add an ARB alloy cargo rack and should be ready for the trail!

OK, @Stuckinthe80s here's one I tore down but DID NOT BREAK MYSELF!
20220304_210712[1].jpg

Robbie ( @powderpig ) gave me this one as an assembly when cleaning out for his move. You could feel that it had broken parts and the drain plug had teeth on it.
When I tore it down I found the R&P look pretty fine but the side gear in this 2-pinion early 100 diff is what broke. (definitely looks like a factory original build based on sealant/parts/fastener conditions found). This goes to show these things break a few different ways (oh, and for other drivers than myself NICK and DAVE!!! :ROFLMAO: )

I also opened up yet another 100 front (yes, that's 3 this month) that had broken/grindy problems (already w/ARB and Nirtos) for a buddy and his also had unbroken ring and pinion but had definitely lost pinion bearing preload and the pinion had started hitting the ARB.

As for Nitro, I was aware of the business changes but I've also heard that their 4.3 gears for this application may be getting better as time moves on. I think this is hard to gauge as Nitro likely has so many part numbers in process globally that it's probably impossible for anybody but them or a very high volume distributor to make quality determinations.

I think I'm probably going to pull my front diff back out in about 3-5 years and have the tiny pinion bearing replaced and everything checked, I'm a firm believer that it's the tiny pinion bearing (and related lube issues) where these usually start to fail. (Pinion preload goes and then it's a tick tick boom game.) No, I don't have sufficient data to support this, but I believe!

Did the first oil change on the diffs since the 500 mile break in.

Rear diff fluid looked brand new. The front looked more used with a silver hue. Plug magnets didn't catch anything spooky looking, just a very fine paste almost like moly grease. Guessing that is just the gear coating?

Front had a bit more than the rear.

First experience with new gears. Am I good to go?

Replaced the limo house battery, fixed a bunch of lights, installed a free subwoofer, lubed the partition glass Explored more miles of wiring,. Rerouted some ventilation hose. Cleaned, cleaned, cleaned. R&R the spare and took off a broken bar. Figured out the rear body mounts are shot (no surprise, double duty) which is why the tailgate rubs on the bumper. Vacuumed more glitter. Talked bot many passerbys. Took a friend to Union station. Kinda like an airport run?

Made new cargo panels out of painted 1/4" birch plywood with sound proofing on the back side. The reason for the mod was I added rear FJ62 shoulder seat belts in my 87 FJ60 and the original cargo panels would needed to be modified due to the plastic seat belt retractor cover. My originals were in bad enough shape I just decided to make new ones. I cut templates from cardboard. I used well nuts in the existing panel connector holes and SS #10-24 screws with finish washers (Lowes). Bought the access panels from Amazon. Have about $140 in the whole deal.

Been working to get the cruiser in shape for the season. In the last week:

Changed springs 864 to 863
New OEM steering rack
New DS LBJ

Still more to do, but trying to get all the critical things addressed first.

How are you liking the 863s?

Replaced my alternator, added a new steering stabilizer, finally added the front left shock, got a spare set of belts, took a look at my first aid kit and tool bag, and got a fire extinguisher for the truck!

Did notice my diff seeping...
