Just priced out what I would like, came to just shy of $100k. I'll have to pass.
I thought I remember hearing recently that 1% of all cars in the US are electric and 4% of cars in CA are electric. I tried to find a good source to verify and could only find reputable data from 2021 where .5% of all cars in the US are electric and 1.6% of cars in CA are electric. Its really eye opening that less 1% of cars in CA are electric and they're already having issues. I am speculating that the amount of EVs on the road will increase quicker than they can get the power grid able to handle it.
All in the name of zEro EmisSiOnS.......
Looks like off-roading your EV will get much easier in Moab over the next year.

Some good friends of my wife and I ordered the R1S about 8 months ago. I didn't think they were serious until last week when they said they were looking forward to the delivery date. Mr. mcgaskins, do you have any insider info on the delivery time frame?
Thanks for reply. I want one and I think you can cut me a smoking deal...just sayin.
Dibs on palladium if you sell when your R1S comes in.....I get asked this a lot, and unfortunately it's not a straightforward answer. For example, we are only delivering the quad motor, large battery packs right now which is the 135kw / 316 mile range version, so if someone has an order for the dual motor or the smaller or biggest battery pack, it will be a longer wait. Same thing with certain color/wheel/option packages - I've had my pre order in for almost 3 years and am still waiting because I have an unusual combination of launch edition R1S with the off road upgrade, compass yellow exterior with forest edge (yes green "leather") interior, and 20" bright wheels. If I wanted a white or green exterior with black interior and 21" wheels, I would have already had the option to take delivery, but I'd rather wait for exactly what my desired spec is especially since there is not a discount or incentive for being an employee. I'd encourage your friends to reach out to customer service and see if there is something they can do to accelerate the delivery by changing their current configuration. I have seen on the forums and Facebook some people only waited a couple months from pre order to delivery because of their spec.
This was a white one I spent a lot of time with at our media launch in NY back in June, and I was happy I waited for the S instead of the T. The T is incredible, but the S is exactly what I want since I prefer sleep in the back instead in a tent. Having nothing but glass overhead and tons of rear lighting as well as USB C charging outlets everywhere means camping is going to be even easier in the future!

Here’s a comparison of the 300 series vs the R1S:
2022 Rivian R1S vs. Lexus LX600 Comparison Test: Luxury Off-Road SUVs from Schools New and Old
In the ultimate battle of overland-ready mall crawlers, which three-row luxury SUV comes out on top: The gas-fed model or the EV?www.motortrend.com
That was a pretty good article. It was pretty unbiased in the writing. It will be interesting to see what the residual value of the Rivian will be.
It was also interesting to figure out the consumption costs of fuel or electricity per 100k miles.
The Rivian uses about 48 kWh per 100 miles. This equates out to about 48,000 kWh for 100,000 miles. Xcel's present flat rate averaged for winter and summer rates is about $0.1311 per kWh. That is $6293 per 100k miles. It would also be a max of $5126 at the off peak rate of $0.1068 from 7pm to 1pm the following day with time of use on Xcel. Xcel is presently buying back solar if the form of credits at the cost of electricity at the time of the sale. So from 3-7pm, they will buy back at $0.2779. One peak kWh credit will buy about 2.6 off peak kWh. So it would be easy to get the cost of electricity down to only the equipment cost with solar.
The LX600 will get 19 MPG combined. About 5263 gallons per 100k miles. Assuming about $3.50 per gallon, that is $18,421 per 100k miles.
That is capable of being a pretty sizeable difference in running costs. It is debatable how much it matters relative to a vehicle that is about $100,000 though.
What will a new battery cost in a Rivian, and will it be any better than what the Teslas have been showing.Another thing to consider is maintenance costs. No oil, tranny, diff fluid changes, no air filter, no fuel filter, no timing belt, no head gasket, no PHH, no heater Ts, brakes last forever due to majority of braking occurring during regen, etc. As much as I love the Cruiser (which again isn’t going anywhere), it’s way, WAY more expensive to own in every way - including up front cost if you compare new to new. Because I placed my order a couple years ago I have the “old” pricing which means even with $5k in options my configuration is $82k for a brand new R1S fully loaded. $82k in the 200 world means a 3-5 year old vehicle with 50k miles and tech and features that were outdated a decade ago. I’m not bashing the 200 - it’s my favorite vehicle - but I’m clear eyed about the value proposition here.
What will a new battery cost in a Rivian, and will it be any better than what the Teslas have been showing.
I saw that Tesla batteries were running about $22,500 dollars for replacement. And Rivian has even bigger battery packs.
