What will a new battery cost in a Rivian, and will it be any better than what the Teslas have been showing.

I saw that Tesla batteries were running about $22,500 dollars for replacement. And Rivian has even bigger battery packs.
Most of these battery packs are actually repairable. They have a single dead cell or a few dead cells pulling the whole pack down. I believe that we will see more and more "rebuilt" battery packs as time goes on too. It will be looked at like a transmission replacement or something equivalent where it has a core charge.

I know some people who have done that on first generation Nissan leaf packs. There are a number of shops that specialize in that even. Seemed like pretty reasonable prices to get it done, too.

This really isn’t true. I suggest you take a look at jerryrigwcweything YouTube channel. I’ve actually rebalanced my Toyota hybrids battery pack, but the way Rivian made there battery packs, it won’t be a identify and replace, than rebalance solution.

Well if I buy one new, then I might start to think about it about 8 years or 175,000 miles after I buy it.

Huh kind of a strange back end look. Neat to see one in the wild!

@mcgaskins how do the Tire / 20" rim setup perform offroad?

Just seeing this! They do very well in nearly all scenarios. I prefer a more off road focused tire like the Nitto Ridge Grappler, but that will give up a lot of the on road performance. I think the trade off is worth it for me. Something to note is the OEM size for the Rivian 20" setup is 275/65/20 which is a 34"x11" tire - the exact same size I ran on the LX570 in a KO2 and loved it.

$77+ for one quick-charge, yeah gas is cheaper at that rate!

I just charged in Santa Clarita at a fast charger and it cost a little over $50 for a little under 100kw. That's far too expensive and annoying if I'm being honest. When we charge at home, the same charge would have under $9, but that's obviously not an option when on the road.

I think most people here know who Scott Brady is, and he recently had an R1T and then later had an R1S for extensive on and off road driving. He absolutely loves both vehicles and said the R1S could be the best SUV ever made. Here is he pulling a 5k pound off road trailer down some trails and his earlier R1T video:

Both the truck and SUV versions are becoming common in Monterey where I live. I've seen a few coming back pretty muddy so they're at least getting off pavement.

Matt that is pretty impressive

I was looking at the price and you have to get the bottom RS1 though to qualify for the $10K Fed and state tax incentives as I understand it due to the $80K limit. It doesn't seem like batteries and the quad vs dual motors would be retrofittable, at least easily

I can understand the limitations on less batteries= less range. Can you elaborate on what performance deltas there would be with the different motor setup driving the wheels? Do either of these impact towing ability besides range?

I'll be honest Ken the tax credit situation has become a bit complex with the Inflation Reduction Act. Effective 1/1/23, there is a price limit of $80k ("MSRP is the retail price of the automobile suggested by the manufacturer, including options, accessories and trim but excluding destination fees.") as you mentioned, but there is also an adjusted gross income limit and a "final assembly" requirement that will soon also include supply chain requirements of where raw materials originate from and where they are assembled. The guidance has been delayed through March 2023, but it could render the vast majority of EVs ineligible for the federal tax credit. I hope they revisit the guidance when they realize the IRA has some unintended consequences regarding EV adoption.

I haven't driven a dual motor version of the platform yet (my team should get one in February), but from what I have heard from test and development they are really liking it and haven't seen much compromise. Here is a short video from instagram and an article with more detail and info about the new setup. The initial quad motor setup has been supplied by Bosch, but the upcoming motor variants are all in house which is pretty cool.

Are people not airing down Rivians when going off-road? That insta reel made it look like they weren't?

It depends on the test and who is performing it, but we generally air down for off road activities. The street pressure is 48 psi (it's a heavy vehicle), and we officially suggest 31 psi off road. Of course that determination is up to the driver, and I personally go lower depending on terrain. It's important to not go too low because it's possible to get pinch flats due to the wheel to tire ratio - and no it's not possible to go smaller than a 20" wheel because of the absolutely massive brakes behind the wheels.

Great Thor's beard! These are the future, I am totally sold. My good friend Scott, who is Rivian Dad on YouTube, let me test drive his truck. I've never been in anything like that in my life. The closest I've been is maybe flying down a roller coaster or suddenly losing altitude in an airplane. I cannot believe the acceleration and how fast these are.

It. Is. Insane.

He's a total evangelist for Rivian and encourages just about anybody to take his truck for a spin. He made a compilation video of people laughing/yelping when he tells them to floor it around 5:45,

Scott is also a cruiser guy and had a 40 for a long time. He wants to go offroading with our club and make a video, said he's willing to get some pinstripes on Slaughterhouse Gulch this Spring. I was ambivalent and have been in a few Tesla's and thought they were fun. Once I actually got to drive an 800hp Rivian I was blown away.
