As in the previous post that mentioned lane filtering done with “style and grace” your comment “when done properly” leaves all sorts of leeway on how lane filtering can be practiced. I’ve seen way more examples of it being done without style and grace or properly and that is what forms my opinion.

There's not much "leeway" when you read the actual verbiage of the law.

So "Properly" has been designed to be carried out much more safely than you're making it out to be. Any of the asshats out there "splitting traffic" at high speeds are doing so illegally, and on their own terms. To them I say FAFO.
the small moto plate was kind of readable after it cleared the leading edge of my hood. I think standard sized auto plate would have been. But 20 yards out things really change based on the last time I pulled footage. I witness a DHS student back into another's students car this spring during school pick up. The footage was enough to recognize the vehicle in the context (parked at school every day). But you couldn't read the plate. So in some random parking lot all you'd know is that it was some random silver Jeep Cherokee with a ski rack.
Letter of the law and actual practice are two, way different things. I haven’t read the law but I have seen actual malpractice. I’m not basing my opinion on stuff at speed but at traffic lights when there are vehicles stacked 6-10 deep across several lanes and a rider decides needs to be at the front of the line.There's not much "leeway" when you read the actual verbiage of the law.

That is the actual reason why lane filtering is a thing. Sitting 6-10 cars deep not being able to make it through a light cycle having your motorcycle overheat, & having cars fly up behind you that aren't paying attention and pancake your bike into the car in front of you. The exact reasons why it's a thing.

I have seen ~20% of riders doing correct lane filtering. The rest are lane splitting and being total Californians. I'm not anti-motorcycle, but I'm anti-idiot.
Here's my question: Let's say you 'lane filter' your way to the front of the line at a traffic light. You're now between 2 cars that are properly in their lanes. From what I have seen, the light turns green, and the motorcycle boogies out first to 'beat the cars' and pick a lane (and get ahead of the cars he was between). This means he's the first victim of someone else 'running the light' from the other direction. This is a serious observation: Is this how lane filtering is supposed to work? If he didn't pull ahead of the pack, he's stuck between 2 cars for a while.

Anyone who "boogies out to beat the cars", isn't being an observant rider in the first place. 99% of riding is being extremely observant of your surroundings. If/when they get hit by a car running a red light, that is still on them, whether they had pulled up as the first vehicle at a stop light or whether they filtered to get there. If a motorcycle is properly sharing a lane at the front of a line at a standstill, and sees a vehicle questionably not going to stop, they would still have enough space between the two vehicles to sit longer and not be hit by any of the cars when/if they move.

Lane filtering is done with traffic stopped.
One reason I do not filter is precisely for the reason you cite. For it to work the motorcycle has to leave to first and accelerate faster. Which will happen under normal use but so many people run red that I prefer NOT to leave first. It's a bit of a built-in advantage of driving a stick shift in the modern day. That moment of hesitation has saved me from being T-boned a couple of times, which is more likely death or serious injury even on surface streets on a bike compared to a car. OTOH the rider should have a better view of cross traffic to avoid this. But hesitating opens you to being rear ended.
Lane splitting is running between moving cars. This is still not legal in Colorado but is in California. I figure CSP knows until car drivers get used to bikes between them that splitting is going to be dangerous.

I watched a guy get nailed for lane splitting last week on 82. I almost hit him merging when he was going around 80 riding the line between lanes. Came out if nowhere. Blew right by two unmarked sherrifs vehicles. Instant karma.
Sometimes it's just the simple things that make me happy.

yeah, the second one. And then just paint the fender and leave the holes?

the story would be, that he just bought it, and took some god awful fiberglass aftermarket super wide fender flares off of it. And his next step would be fixing and repainting what was left behind by the previous owners.
Well that fender should have never been cut to begin with, IMO. I suspect it was a hacky job, which then drove the need to add the fender flares. But why oh why does it take 6 attempts to get the position just right? Or are we swapping between multiple flares to get just the right look? I just don't get it... and then to not patch those holes prior to painting.
But for some reason Bronco people are more willing to chop them up compared to 40 people. It's almost rare to see them in their uncut state anymore... maybe this is the norm? My preference...

Very true, very difficult to find an uncut body. You never know what these old trucks have had to live through.
