Hello everyone! Could use some advice... My 1997 80 Series started hesitating and acting like it was going to stall. This happened after driving for considerable time (to the airport) and even on cold starts. You can smell heavy exhaust. The vehicle is now at Toy Auto Care down south here. They were able to duplicate the hesitation and identified the PCode. They recommended replacing the spark plugs and ignition wires which they did. However, there is still some hesitation on a cold start.

They want to take off the valve covers and maybe adjust the valves. They haven't given me a price yet but I have feeling it will be costly. I went to this shop off of Arapahoe road because of good recommendations so I'm not saying they don't know what they are doing.

I am waiting on a price quote on the working on the valves but does that seem right or any other suggestions?

Thank you!

How many miles since Robbie rebuilt?
A "take off the valve covers and maybe adjust the valves" job should have two prices - (a) checking and (b) "if needed" adjusting.
There are more diagnostics I'd do before pulling the valve cover. Valve clearances have a service interval but are not a common item to go out of spec. They use shims to set clearances, not "adjusters" like some older engines.
It was not a bad idea to do plugs and wires depending how old they were. How old is the cap and rotor? Are all these parts OE and/or NGK?
Have you R&R'd the injector connectors? The plastic connectors are prone to breakage. The metal terminals inside are usually good. I did all injectors recently chasing a rough idle and de-pinned and replaced all the connectors.
A google search "fzj80 land cruiser hesitation on a cold start ih8mud.com" gave much to consider.
I have "used probably good" of most all the external components worth trying, but that is a DIY fix. And many I have hoarded are 93-94, but some are common to all 1FZFEs.

If using a shop you are likely going to have to follow their diagnostic recommendations.

Thanks Daniel. It's been about 118K since Robby rebuilt. New Spark Plugs and Cap and Rotor all done at about 100K. OE... I have not done the fuel injectors. I guess the guy at the shop is the guy they always put on Land Cruisers because he knows them. Yeah, I think i'll just have to follow their recommendations for now.

Hope all is well.. We need to do Crown Burger again sometime!
