2F valve cover on a 60 is cast aluminum.
I always thought they were steel. I'm mistaken then. It's still very close to the sound I've heard when a 22R valve cover was hitting a rocker. On those engines the clearance is small. Using a too flattened gasket or going ham fisted on the acorns is enough.

F engines use stamped steel valve covers, 2Fs cast aluminum. The steel ones tend to warp when over tightened as you describe, and they use cork gaskets. The aluminum ones use rubber gaskets. I put an aluminum 2F cover on my F engine in my '71, it is a fairly common upgrade.
