That's exactly what happened in my 79 Toyota SR5 pickup truck - only it was the fifth gear overdrive that blew out. Heard a big bang and started coasting down the highway. Stopped and then started out again and got a big surprise when I got to fifth gear. Thought I was going to have to repair the transmission but ended up driving it for eight more years with no overdrive.
