End-of-the-week check-in: core support repainted and mounted, face melting with happiness. Oh, look, no pitting, definitely lucked out with the replacement purchase.

The windshield will take about 14 hours to repair. I met the old-timer who does the fab work, hell of a guy.

Seeing the light at the end of a nearly 2-year-long tunnel, and then I get to show up to a club meeting, fill out an application, and hopefully be part of the crew.

Go broke or go home is what I always say. Brand new, in a pair, toes included.

I have a new pair on the shelf too. Waiting until the 80 is back and I have time to tear down the axle. Shiny new hubs are like a cherry on top.

Are you planning on rebuilding your front axle at all? If so, want to go in 50/50 on a knuckle centering tool?

So the knuckle was rebuilt when it was at the shop. I don't know if I should be diving deeper than that? Thoughts?

I’m just having way too much fun, someone call the fun police. Restoring the plastic trims, and I got myself powder coating kit for some of the door and miscellaneous hardware that I want to redo.

I even got myself an Easy-Bake-Oven!

I meant I am sure they would have advised if they needed to go deeper than the knuckle when it was apart. Past that you are getting into axles and gears. They would have inspected the axles when they were pulled for the knuckle job. Gears are usually either good or..... audibly not good.

Repainted the window cranks; it looks OK, but the paint adhesion is abysmal even with the SEM promoter. Any ideas?

I'd say your knuckles/axles are good for a while. I'd still slap them new hubs on though. If you do the new hubs, make sure you function check them before you get out on the trail.

Given the wear conditions on the bearings and shims, we didn't throw a centering tool into the mix. Check shims, replace as necessary, and finish the service. There's a reason not a lot of people actually center their 60 knucks... They typically don't need it.

Here's my thoughts on the centering tool:

I'd probably use it once every other rebuild to make sure the shims were still in good condition and everything lined up. It'd probably act more as a confirmation than a necessary step in the axle service. You'd probably end up using the same shims for the next 5-10 axle services... By then, you'd probably be sending the 60 back to Rust Doctor....
I don't think it's necessary to own the tool, but I like the idea of confirming with it.

When I finally get around to the axle service on the 60, I'll end up centering it. I'm unfamiliar with the last service, an I'd like to make sure.
I'm cheap, so I'll be borrowing the tool from a club member.
