So is this how Hawaii gets its independence?

The DOJ is suing them over this 14 day quarantine thing right now, so I guess they are still a ways away from independence.

Re: Hawaii: I read an interesting article in the Denver Post back in March I wanna say? Basically Gunnison in 1918 said NO ONE is allowed in, period. You can leave but you can't enter. Here is the URL to the article:

https://www.denverpost.com/2020/03/29/pandemic-1918-spanish-flu-colorado-coronavirus/

The virus never really took hold 200 miles west in a Colorado mountain community that instituted a strict lockdown before it arrived.

All public gatherings were disallowed. Anyone arriving in Gunnison by train was immediately placed in quarantine. Two men trying to sneak into town over Cochetopa Pass were arrested. According to Leonard’s research, The Gunnison News-Chronicle warned on its pages: “This disease is no joke, to be made light of, but a terrible calamity.”

The draconian measures earned the town the title of “escape community,” as it emerged comparatively unscathed.

People's Soviet Socialist Republic of California,
Small anecdote from California. My grandma went into the hospital with shortness of breath and fatigue early on New Year's Eve to the hospital in Fresno. It was NOT COVID. Just some pneumonia (she's 90 so I guess that's a thing when you're old). She was trapped in the ER until around midnight on Sunday. So between three and four days she was stuck in the ER waiting for admission into the main hospital. That's because the hospital capacity in California is almost completely consumed. It's getting to a triage medicine situation in certain areas of the state. I was close to rounding up some medical oxygen bottles out of emergency kits that my SCUBA friends carry, and going to get her from Fresno to bring her to the SF Bay Area where there was still a little capacity at the time. There weren't any ambulances available to transport her so it would have been up to a family member to do it. She's cantankerous though and didn't want to leave the Fresno area.

My grandma got home a couple days ago and is expected to make a good recovery but there's still a question of if she may have gotten COVID at the hospital. She's got another week to go before she's in the clear on that. But now my aunt is taking care of her and my aunt until very recently didn't think COVID was a big deal. So we'll see how this goes for my grandma in the next few weeks.

My county just wrapped up with Phase 1 Tier 1a (frontline hospital staff) vaccinations and has started on Tier 1b (first responders, etc). It's looking like we're probably months away from people like me getting a vaccine.

Meanwhile we remain isolated in our house working 100% remote. But we did just get a new exercise bike. So we've got that going for us, which is nice.

I got my first dose on Friday through the Fire Department. No side effects other than a satellite that seems to be following me.

Interesting. I had to go back and see what it was you had commented. It's been a long year.

I want to apologise and atone for my comments and posts in this thread. If I could have known where we would be almost a year later I would have done whatever I could to stop this absurdity.
I think what matters is where we are now and anyone thoughtful enough to consider and address past remarks is ok in my book (you already were). Now I'll go see what a jerk you were :sneaky:

What exactly are you sorry for? I'm a little confused...

Going back and looking through the thread, I see a lot of opinion based on the main stream media news threads...not surprised to see the deleted and censored videos now from YouTube. My trust in main stream media is at absolute zero. I’m looking for a news source I can trust.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I still believe the Chinese virus is still more politically escalated.

Go ahead and flame me.....

Fear mongering and getting caught up in the paranoia. The "cure" is clearly worse than the disease.
Not discounting the severity of the virus in any way I still think that is what the history books will show in 50 years. The issue became so political the world was looking to prove the other side wrong instead of focusing on solutions.....

I’m going to push back on this with this question, we literally came out with a new vaccine in less than a year, using medical technology that no one thought was possible. What do you mean we haven’t focused on a solution?

Certainly not looking to get in an argument here....

The speed of the vaccine development and distribution has been amazing. No question there. In my very humble opinion the problem was how it was handled from the beginning. Specifically being wraponized by politicians on both sides for political gain. (I would say one side more than the other but that's my bias showing and if we had a different party in power it probably would have gone the other way) I still think we would be in a much better place if the restrictions put in place were more targeted. For example I have little to no risk of any issues from the virus. That being the case I still could certainly be a carrier and get someone more vulnerable sick so taking precautions to prevent that was clearly the right thing to do.

I'm speaking more in terms of the long term economic ramifications of the last 12 months. The young healthy people with no complicating health factors should have been masked up and working while we protected those who were vulnerable. If you take a look at what has happened to the money supply over the last year we have set ourselves up for some serious trouble down the line.

A few more examples of what I'm talking about....

My brother and a good number of his friends are in their early 20s and have been unemployed since March. Mostly by choice. Many of them are now raging about the importance of UBI and legitimately do not think they should be required to work ever again. It drives me crazy when I hear this.

I, on the other hand, have been very lucky and never had a lapse in employment or pay over the last year. Do I really need to be receiving stimulus checks? Probably not, but someone with complicating health factors who is at serious risk if they contracted covid should.

Maybe "focused on a solution" was not the best choice of words? Just another reminder that short bits of text on the internet is one of the worst ways to properly express an opinion.
