Hey, just stumbled on this thread! I'll add my bit: just got a heck of a deal this week on a Dolmar 510: 20 bucks and a pair of mule deer sheds. Seller thought it was broken. Just needed fresh gas and a few pulls. This is the smoothest saw I've ever ran, and super powerful for 50cc. Dolmar is a German brand that never quite took off in the US. I also run a Stihl 064 that I traded a couple hundred rounds of .308 for, and a little Husqvarna 435 for small jobs. I rebuilt the 064 and have replaced a lot of parts with NOS stuff. Now I have the Stihl bug, and I'm on the lookout for a project 044/440 or 046/460. Anyone got a broken one laying around?

Since.i last posted.in here, i bought an electric stihl. Not the lowest grade, but only one up. Would.def do it again. I've cut stuff I'm not.supposed to with no issues. Tree too big for the bar, no problem...cut around the trunk. Still.havent even charged it. Nice to grab it off the shelf and go cut stuff and put it back on the shelf.

Well, now I've gone off the deep end. I posted a
local ad a couple months back stating that I work on/buy/sell chainsaws and now I've acquired these super cool retro saws, among others. Poulan 306a, Homelite Super XL, McCulloch Pro Mac 10-10 and Mini Mac 35, and Stihl 026. I also cleaned the frick out of my 064 and bought some parts for it. Still looking for an 044. I have flipped quite a few over the last few months: a few stihls, husqvarnas, and Dolmars. If you guys need saw work, I can probably do it for you.

I'm in N. Broomfield, but I do search in WY for some items.

Reviving the Stihl discussion. My new 261 vapor locks/heat soaks tragically when hot, such that I had to let it sit for 1 hour and fully cool to restart. I only shut it off in the first place because it ran out of gas. I refueled it, and it absolutely would not start - and I'm aware of most of the tricks for this. This is the 3rd or 4th big cutting session I've had with it. When it's cool, it starts right up.

It also pukes bar and chain oil inside the case (a lot of it), and it has the revised/improved tool-less oil cap. Emails to Stihl are unanswered (over several weeks) and I know if I take it to a dealer, they will replace the spark plug and charge me $25 and not fix it. Very frustrating.

Has anyone ever gotten Stihl to answer an email, or this a waste of time. Stihl's total lack of customer support really pisses me off. Dealers are semi-useless, and corporate appears to be totally useless.

You might try calling JAX outdoor…at least the one in Broomfield is an authorized Stihl dealer and they do a lot of work on saws. They could at least answer questions real time for you. I’ve had the same thing happen to me with my Echo 590 as well as some Stihl saws. Since I usually have at least one extra saw with me, I typically just change saws until the hot one cools down. I also remove and check the air filter and leave it off for a bit to allow the carb to cool. @Corbet will likely have some tricks.

You're not using any type of alcohol additive right?

Thanks Paul. Yes, I'm using E10 gas, as I did/have for years in all my Stihl and Husq. equipment. Recall this saw vapor locked on the dealer-installed genuine Stihl 50:1 fuel. I should mix 1 gallon non-Ethanol fuel and see if that helps. Can't hurt. I like the idea of removing the air filter as a cooling trick, although it shouldn't be necessary.

I think the alcohol burns a little hotter and these tiny engines are turning well over 10000 rpms so anything to help cool them when running in the summer. Can the 261 also be adjusted for your altitude?

Already properly tuned for 7K elevation by the dealer, and it runs as it should (based on my ear). I think this (vapor locking) is a design issue of the saw. My Husqvarna 55 Rancher never did this in 25 years of use.

My little 211 had a super bad bar oil leak and a replacement oil tube helped. It was leaking at the tank. Not sure if yours has a similar design. The hot start issue I’m not sure how to solve. That’s really annoying. I assume you’re using non ethanol fuel. I run either MoGas from the airport (100 octane ethanol free) or pony up for the sthil moto mix.

Moto Mix.

I switched to using only the Moto Mix a few years ago, and I literally have zero problems with vapor lock, hard starting, or carb gumming now. Ever. On any of my Stihls. Same with my mother's 261. It was always hard to start when hot, but switching to the Moto Mix solved it. Starts as easy as my 362 now (which is to say very easy).

I have not tried the Stihl Moto Mix yet as I've not had any issues with premium ethanol free. My 290 can be a little slow to get going when cold but starts without much drama. The 462 fires right up. Both are fine hot as long as I don't leave them in the sun for an extended time. The MSA200c has never given me any fuel issues.

Couldn't find a good deal on a 2511, but did find a decent 303t to tackle the big maple that died this year.

I've run a lot of different saws, but my dad's old 044 is '"stihl" my favorite.

Just cut some big oak logs and milled some slabs for a project.

Have some Husqvarna's too.

Need to get the crosscut saw business back in gear now that I have shop space!

You ever see white oak out there Martin? I’m looking for 10’ logs, to mill beams out of, roughly 12x12s down to 6x8 or so.

And how do you like the Norwood? What size mill is that?

Yeah, that pic is actually white oak, we get it often! How many beams do you need?

I want to say Norwood can mill 20' lengths and up to 36 inch diameter if you're careful with your first cuts. I like it, but its the only mill i've run, so nothing to compare to.
