How are you liking the rock lights?? I’m looking to add some to both trucks. I like the price of those comps.
Yes!!! I love them! The procomps are really nice aluminum light bodies, but the wiring was a pain in the neck. They come as 6 pods with about 3ft of black/red wire, a basic wiring harness and a switch. No instructions, no connectors, no junction box, no anything. I called Procomp to ask if they had any recommended install instructions and they connected me to the designer directly!! His only advice was, “We sell them this way so you can install them however you want” (MmmK). So if you are comfy running extra wire to get it all connected I say go for it.
The other options I researched are more complete systems that are essentially plug and play, but I don’t like the light body’s as much. The KC lights put out great light but they are plastic body which doesn’t seam ideal for durability or water resistance.
@Lefty installed those to try something different than my procomps (because they were such a pain to wire up). He did the install in like an hour. He also installed magnets on the so if a rock hits them they just pop off. Overall they seem like a good overlander solution 😏.
Baja designs also seem like a good option. Their design is similar to the procomp but the whole system is plug and play (I don’t know if the pods are aluminum or plastic). Of course you pay for it.
Since they’ve been installed just before CM I’ve learned one main thing. 6 lights are good, but 8 lights are best. I struggled with placement for a while (I’ve had them in a box since September 😅). It was either one over each wheel and one and the front and back center *or* one in front of the front wheel, one on the center of the slider and one behind the rear wheel (which is what I did, all inset and protected). Eight pods would allow you to have one directly behind the front wheel and directly in front of the rear wheel (note that it might get crowded directly behind the passenger side wheel if you have cat armor).
Bottom line is they are really great for spotters, and especially good for guys following on the trail. Extra bonus, that I think you’ve seen me mention on go.eighty, is that they serve as rad camp nightlights... that was a super cool bonus 💪 (My wife twisted her ankle and broke her kneecap at a really rocky campsite last summer... I’m sure these lights could have prevented that 😬).
I’ll be anxious to know what you decide on! As soon as you get them in let’s plan a night drive! - R
