I've never heard of a sherpa winch. Where did u get that?

I was looking around on youtube for winch reviews and what have you. The first Sherpa video was this video haha. Then looked at this one . The second really caught my attention. Then I started chatting w/ their sales reps. I was impressed by some of the stuff they were saying: cut gears, IP68 ingress rating, the brake is not in the drum, but rather in the gear box to reduce drum heating, albright solenoids standard. Originally I was interested in the 12k winch, then they recommended the 17k# winch. The 17klb winch was the same price and size as the 12k - so I went for it. Why not - the line speeds with respect to load were basically the same as 12000lb. Free shipping to the USA.

I haven't really tested it yet, but nothing seems suspect yet.

1HDT teardown is mostly complete. Just waiting for a better impact gun to get the crank bolt off then off to the machinist.

Got a flat tire on 285. First time ever. Heard a very loud metallic clanging going under the bridge exit to Morrison and thought “what in the world was that?”

The steering pulled like there was a strong side wind going down C-470 and as I pulled off on the Bowles exit the tire started howling and the cruiser was noticeably leaning. Pulled over quick in a safe spot at that point. Hole right in the middle of the tread.

Performed an extraction on a fried alternator in the 100 Saturday. Got the new alternator procured to put in it. Now I have to figure out how to deal with the burnt/melted charge wire before I can put it back together. The insulating cap was burned to cinders and the lock nut on the wire was welded to the post. All I have is the burnt end of the wire to work with since the lug fell off when I disconnected it.

:(

I was drilling holes in a 4Runner today and stumbled onto a little innovation that really made it easier. I can't be the first guy to think of this, but I haven't seen it before.. the issue is I need a 7/16" hole in order to fit an M8 riv nut, and drilling a hole that big has always been a challenge, since my step drills are so long by the time you get to 7/16" you'd be through the head liner. So I was using real drill bits, which have a tendency to walk, or grab at the end, or get dull real quick.

Today I had the brain far to just cut down one of my step drills... so I can use the long one to get up to about 3/8" or so, then switch drills to get all the way up to 7/16". The result was really good, the drills didn't walk at all, the holes nice and clean and centered, and no burrs at all allowing the riv nuts to seat down nice and happy. I must say it's the best set of ruv nuts I've installed yet, and I hate drilling holes in 4Runners quite a bit less now.. here are the pics.

@MountainGoat Dan did you get your alternator off?

I got it off (and out). Haven't put it back together yet. I'm trying to decide how to get around the burnt wire. The way I see it I can:

A) stand on my head in the engine bay, trying to strip it back until I hit good wire. Then splice on a length of good wire with a lug on the end to connect to the new alternator

or B) buy a new universal fit wire to run from the alternator to the battery (assuming that's where it terminates). I haven't researched that end of it yet.

Then put it all back together. I pulled the power steering pump, radiator overflow tank, air box assembly and splash pan just to get to the alternator. What a pain!
