So I finally got my head back from Gunn, it took 7 weeks because they are backed up. Complete head rebuild, stainless steel Chevy valves, they did a great job (1K), they could have done it for $400 less. After talking to Jim C (carb guru--IH8MUD). I decided to follow his advice:

“This is not rocket surgery. It is a stock valve job on a GMC inline 6 truck head using GM/Chevy parts. If the machine shop cannot comprehend how to do it, select another machine shop. The valves, retainers and locks are standard 1.84/1.50 SBC. All 12 springs are the 'short' springs used on 1970s&80s SBC exh w/ positive rotator. The machinist will have to decide what to do for seals. SBC umbrellas are the easy button. I insist on a positive seal, which requires cutting down the top of the valve guide to fit. The machinist has tooling to do this, as it is a requirement for upgrading to positive seals on an old SBC. Stock replacement swirl polished SS exh valves”

Probably overkill. Much better compression (130+ in all cylinders). Intake/Exhaust manifold resurfaced as well at Mountain High Performance (Gunn couldn't do it). All good!

It's a 1972 all stock. Got pretty hot heading up to the tunnel and top of Independence Pass, and loosing power in 3rd. Good power in 2nd but high RPMs. I guess that is what is to be expected. 45-50 mph near the top???

I noticed some vaper lock (on starting the engine) when hot and wondering it has to do with the flap on the exhaust manifold. It is free moving but the spring is shot. It was stuck in the closed position previously but now free flowing. ANY ADVICE?

The rear sill is starting to show significant rust. ANY SUGGESTIONS??? (SEE PICTURE) I don't know how to weld...

THANKS,
David

@72 FJ40 I called Mountain High about my manifolds because Kenny at Gunn wouldn't do it, and the guy on the phone said "we don't really do that, but I guess maybe we could in 9-10 months." I'm curious how the process went for you on the manifolds.

I got the impression that it is a pain, he did a good job but I got the impression that it takes time away from other jobs because of set up... and that it really wasnt something that they want to do and they are very busy right now. I called then and then dropped them off while gunn was working on the head. Its my DD so he just might have been being nice.
