I love taking lightning photos. I didn't prepare as well for this as I should have. Some nights, if I think there will be a good show I'll pre-focus in the daylight, lock it in, and when it gets dark I know I've got it right. It's tough to focus in the dark.

So I'm curious, whats the process you use for shooting lightning? I've always been interested. But never got around to learning about it.

Years ago, I got some incredible shots of lightning with a film camera. I used the B exposure (open as long as you have the button pushed) and the F-stop almost closed.

The thing that made it work for me was to count the time between strokes of lightning. I would see a flash where I was aimed, then start counting. If I got to 20 for the previous one, I would count to 18 and open the shutter. Most of the time, I caught a lightning stroke within a second or two, and then I released the shutter.

I think lightning needs a certain amount of time to build up the charge. If you wait until it is almost ready, based on prior events, you can catch some good shots.

A tripod or a steady rest is a must. I used the porch rail and some props back then.

I'll add that for that one (best of a few I got, I was quite a distance away on my porch with a tripod and remote shutter button. I was using a 70-300 racked all the way out. I could watch the strikes from far away and it was a dark-ish direction. I shot at like f/5.6 to f/8 so I could keep the shutter opened up longer pointed in the right direction. I think I also kept ISO at 200. (I should probably look). I wanna say I grabbed a and shot at 10-20 sec shutter speeds. I might have even just set up the delayed timer and set it to that shutter speed.

Wow, beauty of a shot. How did you light the front of your truck so it wasn't all in shadow?

Used the HDR setting on the iPhone. It takes 2-3 different exposures at different exposures and combines them... In seconds. Freaking crazy when you compare the effort it took to do that in the dark room.

storm and rainbow

had to stop and grab this on the way home last night. I pushed saturation, contrast and vibrancy(Aperture Tool) pretty high. It did bring out the second rainbow hiding in there.

On the subject of clouds - this is straight out of the camera, full automatic, no adjustments other than sizing it to upload to the forum. This was from my porch, with the 200mm, shot on July 20th.

lol, at first it thought you were talking about my shop table! thanks, that has been a ton of work, I can't wait to finish it but this rain has put a stop to that! materials will get trashed in the back of the truck on the way home form buying them. grrrrr
