Mike do the head gasket before you drop the new engine in, cuts the time down by a bunch when it is out. Much easier to get to everything when you are not leaning over a fender.
Progress is always good.
Port matched the exhaust on the 80. I was surprised how little the manifolds needed to match the head and gasket. Dropped them off to be ceramic coated inside and out.
Mike who did you use to do your coatings? I used a guy down in Denver that did an awesome job if you're looking. Keep it up, things are coming along nicely... I am a little disappointed that you ported without polishing!
The new engine had one issue though. The front main and oil pump cover seal let go on the way to Utah and sprayed about a quart every 100 miles or so. Not a job I care to tackle again but the gist of it is the crank bolt has to be removed at almost 600ft pounds and torqued to 304foot pounds! When you take off the harmonic dampener, the seven oil pump cover screws tend to break off. Putting them back on, there is no torque spec so most folks torque them just before the philips screw strips out. Using JDM bits, I torques the oil pump cover screws to 11.6 foot pounds and then, with Simpson's 6' torque wrench, torqued the crank bolt to about 320.
