In College I dated a girl that lived in Seward. Spent the entire summer up there and drove with her back to Denver along the Alaska highway. Well worth the trip. Take your time and not only see the things that you plan on seeing, take the occasional "what's down that road
" side trip. Have fu and share pictures.

Might be changing gears here and the discussion has shifted from renting a rig to driving the whole trip from Durango. I need my 250 to show up as Marianne has made it clear she won’t do that in the 80.

I totally understand you on that, the last time we went on a road trip to Ouray in my 60 back in 2011 my wife swore off road trips in my "old" Land Cruisers, but she's looking forward to road trips in the new 250.

That was part of the reason I sold my first Gen 4runner and got a newer Tacoma.

If you can swing the time I’d do the drive. You’ll see a lot. It’s neat.

This week I've been looking into methods to battle the mosquitoes on the trip. Anyone have experience with applying Permethrin to your clothing/tents or the clothing you can buy with it already applied?

Maybe look into Harvest Host or HipCamp for camping on private land?

We hammered out our full itinerary over the weekend. Looking for a mapping software recommendation. Ideally something that will work with apple Carplay so it will display on the trucks infotainment screen. I'd like to map the full trip rather than program in destination each morning. I have OnX but that is not ideal for this application.

I use android so I'm not sure if exactly which app to recommend but check out apps that interface with the open street map project. The android apps generally allow you to download all of the map contents for offline navigation and you can import gpx tracks that you would create ahead of time on your computer and use that for navigation.

If you start digging this stuff, you can really get into it with GIS software to build your own custom map layers and more using free software like QGIS. And then you might end up with a new job as a GIS jockey 😅

Doesn't Gaia support Carplay? Also Rever, the moto mapping app, I understand supports Carplay.

Personally not a big fan of Gaia so I use Caltopo but don't have anything with Carplay to test it. I don't think it supports Carplay from what I can research.

What are you looking to get out of the navigation? You just want a squiggly line on a map to follow? Can the mapping app on the dash just import a GPX?

I just want a basic line plus distances. Not concerned at all about getting lost it’s more about how far to go that day and not programming each morning or having to relay on cell service which the OEM system does. In fact now that I’ve dumped the Toyota phone app off my phone I’m not sure I can even use the OEM nav. I used Apple Maps generally anyway for city stuff.

I also have a new wireless CarPlay double DIN waiting to go into the 80’s dash. So killing two birds one stone potentially.
