Once we entered the Monument, we left the main dirt road for a two track that would hopefully get us close to Grand Island.

We headed out to inspect the crossing of the channel of the Missouri at Grand Island.

Some cool geological formations as we drop down closer to the river.

Our camp for the night.

Woke early again to catch the sunrise. Would be one of the better ones i've seen in some time.

Inversion camp #2. Woke in time to find the Missouri covered in fog. Got to the ridge over look in time to watch it cover the rest of the River Breaks and camp. Again, one of the better sunrises to date.

Looking SE towards the Charles M Russell Wildlife Refuge- Named after the Famous Cowboy Artist. He and Kid Curry would ride the Montana Range for some time. Becoming good friends.

Drew, a maker of knifes, showed Marco the art of sharpening the night before. Marco continued well into Breakfast.

Goodbyes. Marco and his brother Christian would part with us and head to the Morrision Jeep Trail and Yellowstone. Drew a short drive to his new home in Bozeman.

Matt and Martin would join me for the hike back down and the overnighter on Grand Island.

Everything seems to be big in MT. Even the spiders.

So why all this talk of Grand Island?

After robbing the Great Northern out of Malta, Mt at Exeter Creek, Butch Cassidy, The Sundance Kid and Kid Curry headed south towards Kid Curry's hide out in Hide A Way Coulee, where he had a cabin. Kid Curry's partner in there horse ranch outside of the Little Rockies, Jim Thornhill, stocked the cabin with provisions and also had a boat waiting at the southern end of Hide A Way Coulee, hidden in the willows. From Kid's hidden cabin, the three bandit's would take the boat across the river to Grand Island. Spending some time there while thing's cooled down after the robbery. It's a nice remote spot. Almost the same as it was the day Lewis and Clark sailed by. While hiding on the Island, Kid Curry would make a visit in Great Falls to his friend Charles M Russell, with the hopes that he could pass signing the stolen back notes.

While looking down on Grand Island from the ridge above camp the day before, the Island looked like a park. We'd soon find it to be overgrown with brush.

Hide A Way coulee again. It's 5 miles ish to the north and the start of that coulee. Wonder how it would have been on horse back.

I dragged friends down with me to camp on Grand Island. The hopes of finding remnants from the Wild Bunch Days. To be honest, it was a way for me to say goodbye to Grandpa. My hero. On top of being the foreman to Great Grandpas Ranch in NM ( The Diamond Day), he was a ski bum, horse racer, Foreman, and river rat. Along with making his own flies and rods, he was a river guide on the Yellowstone and Missouri. A week at a time in the summer while growing up, i'd float the Missouri with Grandpa. This camp on Grand Island would be something wonderful.

Looking west from Grand Island. A few of the group that didn't want to do the hike, would find them selves on the old track to Cow Island. West of here. We could pick them up on the handheld, but nothing in return.
