Oh joy, P0401 is back... (and how 80's fail emissions)

The '97 LX I picked up is going to need to jump through these hoops - hopefully the full new exhaust (sans headers) will be here by the end of the week and I can get those installed.

I also have a P0330 code which is apparently for the Bank 2 knock sensor - I need to get my head in there and see if the harness is loose or something along those lines, it seems the sensor itself is relative expensive.

Hopefully between the new exhaust parts + figuring out that sensor I can get the truck to pass emissions...

Does your P0330 come back immediately when you clear it? I get a P0330 which shows up about once a year on a cold day when I don't let it warm up well enough before driving. I'll drive it from the house about 1/4 mile to the stop sign and the light comes on. I clear it, and it stays off for a year :)

Why are limits so different between 95 and 96? I didn't think the emission design changed in those years. Looks like 95 has a lot more grace!

Its got nothing to do with the truck. The state sets different emissions standards for different years - newer vehicles have to meet lower cutoffs. Its the same with FJ60s. Its easier to pass with an earlier one because the cutoff is a bit higher.

Yes I cleared it and it came right back. I need to do my due diligence of getting my eyes on it in the engine bay - I found the oil level sensor's plug is disconnected from the harness, and I have read that similar things happen to the knock sensor when head gaskets are done. At this point I don't even know if it is connected to the harness.

Speaking of the oil level sensor, I don't see any wires dangling near it - does anyone know what part of the harness do I want to trace to try to find the wiring for it? I went spelunking in the FSM but couldn't locate the harness diagram. Thanks

You were right re: wiring manual - managed to get the oil sensor repaired yesterday! Now need to get a knock sensor now (anyone have one?) and then get the new exhaust on to see if I can get it to pass emissions.

Smog and other woes.

I recently totalled :( my sweet 80. I had just finished the lift and bumpers and was looking forward to further modification when I made an error in judgement. The frame got bent severely and to make a long story a bit shorter the 80 was a gonner. Needless to say I was heartbroke and had an unundriveable wreck sitting in the driveway. Amazingly the engine still ran and the e-diffs were unharmed. Everything from the front doors back is still in good condition.
I had been unable to pass smog tests with her and obtained a waiver from the state so as to be able to attend CM2016. In spite of having severe knee problems at the event and a broken birf on Moab rim I had a great time at the event and helped out to set record sales of apparel. :)
I spotted another '94 80 in Co Spgs on Craigslist a few weeks ago and as luck would have it I was able to snag her for $2800. The best part is she is my first 94 80's twin. She has the e-diff's (tho not functioning) she had a fresh brake job and brand new Toyota birf's in the front. She runs well and needs the valves adjusted. Along with a rear main leak. A sweet ARB bumper on the front was frosting on the cake. I know, I know, so get on with it allready.
I got an oil oil change and air filter change done-topped off the tank with high grade and 3 bottles of heet, set the base timing, rolled down the windows that would, aired up the tires and ran her through the emissions station at 30th and Peoria with the slimmest of hope. You guessed it-she failed spectacularly with a high NOx of 6.6.
Here is where the story takes a turn. Worse or better you decide. The very next day (Oct 21) I was sceduled for and received a total left knee replacement at University Hospital in Aurora. I was in Hospital until last Monday and have been convalescing at home since then. I am happy to report a near miraculous recovery as I am now walking normally albeit with a deal of pain. I know this has nothing to do with the all-important 80 story but I can hardly contain my joy. OK so back to what's really important.
I will include the IM240 results at the end of my ramble so be patient. The rig popped a code with disappeared again on the way home from Springs tho I have not attempted to red it out yet. I could use a bit of help tracking down my smog problem if anyone out there would be so inclined. :D

Hi Bruce, I went and looked at/drove that truck two weeks ago - congrats on picking it up! I'm unfortunately no help on figuring out how to help you diagnose what's wrong but that truck was gone from CL very quickly so it's funny to see someone on here end up with it. That same day I picked up a '97 LX450 up in Denver.

re: your truck, I peeked behind the driver's side rear cargo area plastic cover underneath the rear window and saw a good deal of rust if you're not already aware. I think they had driven some wood screws through the plastic to keep it attached to the body. :( I also had the same issue trying to get the lockers to engage - when I took it for a drive on the seller's dirt roads I steered both ways, reversed, etc. in an attempt to get them to clunk in but no luck. A CEL was also coming on intermittently.

Thanks for the reply and the astute advice Mike. Yes, another high miles rig. I am deficient at this point in my search for the "NOx demon" but will post more as I know more. I went through the nasty job of de-carbonizing the intake plenum and replacing the EGR valve along with numerous other maintenance protocols on 80 #1 only to be short circuited again at the e-station with High NOx. I am hoping to cut to the chase and root out the demon before I go through that ordeal again with 80 #2.

Rust and woodscrews, funky racing seats and a goofy steering wheel. Lots of issues but still a good price I could afford and a good match as I have 80 #1 to scavenge good parts from including the OME lift and rear bumper, winch, roof rack, wheels and 35" ProComps, custom drawers etc. I know that "good money after bad" is not the wisest of choices, but I am determined to salvage the beaucoup bucks and love I sank into 80 #1 to refurb 80 #2. I am tilting at windmills I know but with the outrageous prices being asked for older 80's I feel like going this way will be the best course to salve my consciense for wrecking #1. I could have bought a newer Rav4 or a Celica and tried to part out what's left of 80 #1 and just given up. But I am still lusting for a trail capable rig that's not a horror to drive on the street. Any criticism and or advice/help that can be offered is welcomed at this point. Call me crazy, but I am retired and with more time than $$$. This project will help motivate me to recover from my knee woes and the end result may actually be worth it.

If you still have all those parts from 80 #1, then 80 #2 can definitely be revived! Looking forward to seeing you bring that beast into shape. Mechanically I'm a noob, and I was somewhat intimidated by the '94 being bereft of OBD2, so having my '97 and the plethora of info available on ih8mud.com is giving me the wherewithal to get it where it needs to be.

Here's my thread on Mud where I'm tracking my progress, you should make one over there too!

Edit: a question for you - if you still have your old 80 (and the engine/drivetrain), would there be any way I could buy one of its knock sensors off of you? I'm waiting on sensors to show up from China but it may be another week or two, and I'd like to slam a sensor into this beast and see if I can get it to pass emissions so I can get real plates for it. I also need a plug off the harness for the courtesy light in the door if you would be so willing. :) Thanks!

Your first 80 was pretty sweet. Look forward to seeing#2 come together. I'm sure it will be nice. Just takes a bit to get everything baselined. So many people give up on 80s and doing maintenance around 200k thinking it's worn out having no idea how many miles they are really capable of. If u sell off the leftovers you'll probably make a fair amount of cash. :)

Unfortunately a coworker just scheduled a 9am meeting the following day (10th) in Milwaukee that I have to be present for so very little chance I can be at this month's meeting. :( If you would be so kind as to hang on to one for the December meeting I will definitely do my best to be there!

Haha I'd be happy to be another set of hands and eyes to help on a project like that. I'm also keeping an eye out for 80-related things like seats etc. on local Craigslist; I talked with this guy over the weekend, he was responsive and has a '94 that he's parting out, I wonder if he has things like seats that might work for you: http://denver.craigslist.org/pts/5853970979.html

Oleg in Castle Rock seemingly has a number of viable parts but he sure isn't cheap.

Edit: Bruce, is there any chance i could come up to you sometime this week and snag that knock sensor? I got my temp tag extended to 11/10 but am not optimistic the Chinese sensors will be here before then. Let me know if there's anything I can help you with in the meantime when I come up too. Thanks!
