Kurt's deal is a kit including harness and bulbs. Knowing Kurt, he's vetted the whole thing and it's ready to go as a drop-in. I'd speculate if you simply ordered the PN from any Toyota dealer you'd still be having to figure out your way to splice it in and procure your own bulbs.

Matt, I'm looking at your sig line and you are actually putting cupholder in as something important enough to list as a mod to your 80? Really? And what is metric TLC leather? Is that somehow distinct from imperial leather? 🤣🤣🤣

I haven’t ordered it myself, but I’m pretty sure the Toyota part number gets you the whole box of parts.

EDIT: just checked. It comes with H4 housings, bulbs, wire harness, zip ties, and instructions.

Check out the mud link. I’m not against ordering from Kurt, but if all Kurt is doing is just reselling the “kit” that Toyota put together, I’d personally rather save the money and order direct from Toyota. :dunno:

and hey man, when it comes to 80s the OEM cupholder mod is a big deal! :lmao: And a triple locked turbo 80 with coils all around is pretty perfect out of the box, not many mods needed! :thumb:

And “Metric TLC” was a company that used to sell leather replacement kits. They are no longer in business.

That's a great deal. I wonder if Toyota has a similar round 5 3/4" setup that would fit my Stout? 2 of the 4 original sealed beam koitos are out.

That’s below my wholesale pricing with Toyota. I’m sure there are different levels to that, but just wow. I can’t imagine how Stevinson makes a nickel on those. Loss leader I suppose. 🤯

I took a rock a few years back and got the kiotos. I like them, but I think I like the cibies best. The differences are minimal and love the flat face kiotos

The new SAE compliant Baja Design LP 6 is going to be marketed as a street legal headlight.

Unless they drop the light output significantly SAE beam pattern or not I don’t want that pointed my direction on the street.

To give some feel for what Corbet is saying, an H4 bulb is around 1,000 lumen and the LP6 is 11,225 lumen.

I'm of course not tied into the industry like you guys so I've only been able to find the S2 SAE and Squadron SAE for road-legal lights.

I just gotta say, that now that the sun goes down earlier and I'm driving home from work after dark, these newer cars with their LEDs are fricking blinding me! Especially at the top of hills (where they are aimed at my eyeballs) and on left hand curves (where they're aimed at my eyeballs). I duck behind my a-pillar on the latter. No help on the former, I just look away and trust my knowledge of every inch of the road to and from work so I don't have to look at them. I have to say, that since I put those higher power lamps in my 60, that's been helpful. But my 40 and 45, not so much!

Had the ah-hah moment this morning when it popped into my head that it's the DOT that approves headlights (that is found in the FMVSS). SAE makes standards so a light is said to be SAE-certified to meet it but it's only road legal if the DOT accepts the SAE standard for use on the road by cars.

Sooooo armed with that it is possible to crack the top secret using "LP6 DOT legal" to search.

"In God we trust, others must provide data."

Because my fellow western slope mate concern is valid. The DOT has limits for intensity and brightness and it's just courtesy not to blind other drivers, so Baja surely must have reworked the spreads. Which from the thumbnail on the video seems that the lens and reflectors do look different.

For what it's worth, I have heard the Koito kit from Toyota (81110-60P70) is not DOT legal although I believe it is E-Code approved. That's the European headlight specification which differs from US DOT specifications. The kit comes with 55/60w bulbs, which meet DOT approval, but I believe the housings are what's not DOT approved.

And you know what? I like them a LOT better. The cutoff is much sharper so my chance of blinding oncoming drivers is almost nil compared to washy DOT housings that spray light everywhere. The housings seem to focus the light on close and mid range really well, and have good peripheral lighting. It really works to put the light where I personally find it most useful. As always, spend the time to adjust your aim correctly. And on my 60, general electrical system upgrades really improved the light output of the bulbs - upgraded lighting harness, upsized main ground cables, cleaned ground points on the body, and an upsized alternator charging cable. My lights are brighter while driving and don't dim at all when I come to a stop.

For me it isn't necessarily about having purely higher powered headlights though. It's about better placement of the light that actually lets me see what I need to see. For me, the aftermarket 7" round LED kits I've seen just spray the light everywhere like most DOT halogen setups. Yeah, they're brighter than the sun, but the light looks diffuse and washed out while I'm behind the wheel. Every single other bulb in my truck is LED except the headlights. Maybe if I ever found a set of LED headlights I'm happy with I'd install them, but that hasn't happened yet. And don't get me started on the 6k+ color temperatures - that really fatigues my eyeballs. I can look at 3.5k-4.2k all night long.

Here's a link to an interesting study by AAA on US vs Euro headlights: https://www.aaa.com/AAA/common/AAR/files/ResearchReportEuroSpecvsUSHeadlamps.pdf

The LP6 would work well if they were able to tie into the high beam selector like a bi-xenon. The cutoff for the aftermarket headlights on my truck is razor sharp. I just need the headlight beam height dial like on the Tundra for when I am carrying stuff and the rear springs compress. I would definitely be interested in the SAE LP6s

They have had dynamic LED headlights in Europe for almost a decade. We weren't allowed to have them in the US because of the regulation about active headlights until recently.

I should have them on Long Cruiser at KOH in about 6 weeks and will let ya know!

This picture shows what 4 of those optics on the fog light do. Light is the Squadron SAE mounted in the factory fog location on my 2006 100 series. Naturally on a headlight they would need a beam not so wide.

Am I the only one who does not like a sharp cutoff on my lights? For my eyes that sharp cut off makes it harder to spot wildlife outside the beam pattern as my eyes adjust to the higher contrast of light/dark. Verse my OEM 80 series lights. Sharp cut off is fine in town but hate them on the country road drive home.

For animals, I just run some smaller SAE Rigid LEDs that are in my steel bumper and angled out a bit. They are wired to use the fog light switch.
