So I picked up a 1970 40 a couple of weeks ago and id like to figure out exactly what it's got going on in it since the previous owner didn't own it very long and was pretty vague on the details. It has a 2f with a weber carb and a 4 speed which I know are not original. So I was curious if we can determine what year the motor is and if it really matters at all when buying parts for it. Here are a few pics. It sounded healthy when we got it running and it looks pretty clean under the valve cover but I am about to rewire the whole 40 since there was a decent amount of damage to the original loom. This will probably be the first of many questions I'll have on this rig since it is my first 40. Thanks

What is the engine number? Should be stamped on block near distributor, above starter. Great looking 40 project!

This is from wiki:

1975 2F 000001 - 2F 046000
1976 2F 046001 - 2F 110000
1977 2F 110001 - 2F 190000
1978 2F 190001 - 2F 270000
1979 2F 270001 - 2F 360000
1980 2F 360001 - 2F 450000
1981 2F 450001 - 2F 540000
1982 2F 540001 - 2F 650000
1983 2F 650001 - 2F 760000
1984 2F 760001 - 2F 850000+

First thing I would do is build a mechanical secondary two barrel Aisan carb for it. 70-73

244813 is the casting number so looks like it is from a 78. I also found a sticker on the block that I didn't noticed til I cleaned it up. Looks like it was a rebuild from Hi-tech engines out of Spokane wa. Anyone ever heard of them?

Your question about engines caught my curiosity, I'd never heard of them and have zero first hand experience. I just wondered if being the PNW there was some connection to Ted and Todd who used to run Engnbldr (a lost 22R resource). There's no connection. They were in Portland, which I'd forgotten, not Spokane which I was thinking.

Old threads that google-fu has found.

Some Wayback captures for the websites mentioned in the forums above. See a mention of Toyota 3.0L, which I figure to mean 3VZ V6 just based on the age of the websites.

So nothing meaningful to add, just thought it could save you 10 minutes that I spent.

Congrats on the Cruiser.

Next up is identifying this alternator. Is this oem for a 1978 or something else. As you can see the wires were cut. I am not seeing the 3 wires on the wiring diagram matching what I have printed out so not too sure what those do. The smaller white wire is going to the side of the weber carb. I think the large gauge white with blue tracer goes to the ammeter in the cluster. Please correct me if I am wrong. Also, I am unsure if this alt is fried because I am not getting any voltage on any of the wires while the engine is running. Here is a couple pics. Any thoughts would be helpful.

What about the battery voltage when the engine is running... did you measure that?

All the current that goes into or out of the battery (except the current to crank the starter motor) goes through the amp meter on the dash. That's why it's super important to always disconnect the negative side of the battery whenever pulling the cluster. Webers have an electric choke. The juice heats up a bimetallic spring to operate the choke. Of the top of my head I don't remember which wire it is, but the voltage regulator on the firewall will connect and disconnect the alternator from the battery to maintain system voltage, kind of like voltage sensitive contact points like you see in the distributor.

The voltage at the battery is just 12v cause the alt is not hooked up at all at the moment. The previous owner cut the wires in a panic I think when he shorted the charging wire.

It is (supposed to be) mounted on the firewall inboard of the vacuum brake booster. Interestingly, $or is listing 8/76-5/78 and 5/78-4/86 so apparently the month of manufacture matters, BUT if you have a 5/78 which one is correct?
