Frame dipping or galvanizing Denver Metro

I searched multiple terms before posting….

I’d like to get my 45 frame dipped and powder coated or if it’s available I’d like to get it galvanized and powder coated. I’ve heard you don’t need to get it dipped if you get it galvanized due to it being part of the galvanizing preparation process but I can’t confirm that.

I realize any and all frame repair needs to be done before the galvanizing process is undertaken.

Does anyone know if there is anywhere in the Denver metro area that dips vehicle frames or have any recommendations from shops you’ve used?

Any other information on the process or your experience would be appreciated as well!

I had Wyatt's frame powder coated. With frames and wheels they recommend zinc primer. I don't have any long term review since it was just done in aug/sept. The frame did turn out really nice and i was happy with the end product. Its not a heavy coat like you sometimes see. Prep is everything. The Older guy (lindsey's father) that is sometimes there talked to me for like an hour about prep and different metals so the powder adheres correctly so it doesn't flake or chip. I missed a few broken bolts so check and double check. https://www.appliedplastic.com/

You can see his frame here https://risingsun4x4club.org/xf/threads/wyatt’s-40.35924/page-6

@wesintl thank you for your reply. Can you clarify what you mean by you missed a few broken bolts? Did you have Applied Plastic media blast it too? Or did you have it done somewhere else? Any chance you’d share the cost? If you don’t want to post here feel free to PM me.

I missed a few bolts that were broken off in the frame. They will plug all the threaded holes. They Blasted, zinc primer and PC. $750 for blast and pc and 150 for the zinc primer. Total was $900

This subject came up on the LCML around 25 years ago. One of the takeaways that I recall is that if you are going to get your frame galvanized, you need to install fasteners into all the female threads on the frame or else they'll get galvanized and have to be re-tapped to be usable. Also, if it is galvanized there is no need for further coating such as painting or powder coating. I have no first hand experience so I am just recalling the commentary from the List from those who reportedly did have their frame galvanized.

For my '76 resto, I sand blasted to white metal and then put several coats of Zero Rust everywhere. Supposedly at least as good as POR-15 but single stage and much easier to work with. I have used Zero Rust on bumpers and sliders and it appears to last quite well (decades).

Azz Galvanizing does it. I have no experience with them. The nice thing about galvanizing is the frame is dipped and it soaks into everything. Its also usually pretty cheap. I would probably have the frame acid dipped really well first. I know most galvanizing places usually acid dip the metal first but I dont know how well. I do not like powdercoating on 4x4s unless its items that can somewhat easily be sand blasted and powdercoated again. But thats just me. As mentioned above you have to do something about bolt holes.
