My factory 68' rivited steel wheels were grey. I will go and read the date stamp on them tomorrow and post up. Yokohama may still have military bar treads available here. I think black rims ran through 67' in the US. I have a PH # for the Yokohama warehouse in California. They were very helpful when I was looking for my "Traction Service" 7.00 x 15's. What is the length of that piece of chain on the winch cable?

Let me know on the date stamps. I'll see if I can find the codes on these when I get the old tires removed. The 1970 ad shows gray but there is a gap between 1967/68 that I don't have any literature from. I did find one with an F145 engine with black wheels. The first year was 1968? for the non siamese intake and F145 so maybe a crossover. Does your '68 have an F135 in it? They usually used the previous year truck in the current year ads. All 1976 ads were 1975 trucks if you look real close.

update: Found a 1968 review with an F155 and gray rims.

Stripped and dropped off ten rims at Colorado Powdercoat. $40 a rim to sandblast and powder coat black. All of the other shops wanted $50 a rim.

The winch was an airplane starter and yes, we flipped the bezel immediately. :)

hmmm... maybe the brake and clutch master do need a little help. Parts are NLA from every auto parts store and Toyota. I think Kurt may have rebuild kits now though. I didn't see them on his website.

Give me a call Mike, your PM is full. I have a source for those I used on the 45 two years ago...they aren't perfect, but you can make it work and for the cash, completely worth trying. I lost your number, but needed to chat on something else anyway.

My grey rims even had grey overspray on the inside. One still has the rubber rim tape over the rivets. 5 1/2KX 10 67 V is stamped inside the rim adjacent the large valve stem hole. My 40 has an F145. Best I can discern, my 68' was built in Oct. or Nov. 1967. Does the Specter FAQ chart show the starting or ending serial number for the month/year? The 1968 sales brochure I have illustrates black rims on the 40 and grey on the 55. Same as the "Four Wheeler" review from May of 68.

Love all the historical literature, Mike!

I posted this before, but thought I would add it to your thread:

This is my friends 66/67 that belonged to his uncle. This photo was taken in New Mexico when it was brand new. Still has the plastic on the seats. ...and black wheels with the cool T hubcaps...

Pulled the Tin Can clutch and master cylinders on the '64 FJ40 and took some pictures of the rebuild. The early 40 is the same 1" bore as the 20 and can use the same rebuild parts. I also found a new part number for the same kit I used on the 25.

All the same:
Napa - 166
Raybestos - MK166
AC Delco - 18G1226

I only use the two rubber pieces from the kit and reuse all the Toyota innards.

Brake:

Clutch

The only parts that are different. Even though the brake piston is stamped 2-5 and the clutch piston is stamped 2-4, they appear to be the same

Also worked on the electrical. Found out that if you hook the green wire to any other power wire, the car will not shut off. Even with the battery out!

Had to replace the brake switch, a bulb, headlight, and one of the front parking lights. The rest was just cleaning up grounds and corrosion.

Headlights, brights, dash lights, 4wd idicator, running lights, turn signals, brakes, and license plate lamp all work now.

Gruet at 7:30AM? I like your style. Can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning!

I grew up in the Church of Hot Air with our mutual friend Chuck Brayton. Two mutual friends we've mentioned in the past few weeks, Dave! Anyway, when hot air ballooning in the summer, ya gotta start early which means the champagne corks pop around 8am and then you are napping by 10am. Love those early naps. :D
