Well I'm this deep... Maybe I should rebuild the engine too? :p :p :p :p :p

Looks pretty good in the transmission gearing. There are some gears with groves and chips but nothing bad. Looks like it has another 100k miles before I'll need to worry about anything.

There is probably a small leak from the rear main seal on the engine but it's extremely minor. Just a couple drops of oil in the bell housing. It could also be residual from when the oil pan was leaking.

I suspect my water pump might have a small leak. I've found some unexplained coolant while taking the transmission out. The area around the water pump is kinda moist. I've lost about a cup of coolant in the last four hundred miles. Doesn't seem too bad and it could still be equalizing in the coolant system after replacing the radiator.

Real men pull transmissions in loafers with tassels.

The real wear and tear happens in the synchros, but you gotta pull more apart to see those.

Should I do the rear main engine seal when I'm this deep in? I'd like to get it back in the truck tonight though. Now that I know what I'm doing, I think it would take me an hour to get the transmission out again. Hardest part is the two bolts on top of the transmission.

What Douglas looks like in the garage. Loafers, a tie, Aviators.

You know, all those times you've had the transmission in and out and you never thought to wash off the grime & dirt? I couldn't let that be if it was mine. :-)

I don't have anywhere to clean it :( the problems of living in a rented townhouse! I'm not even supposed to be doing auto work in my garage. Whoops!

A bottle of Simple Green and a buttload of paper towels! That's what I had resort to when I cleaned the firewall and bell housing while I had the engine out.

All back together and a successful test ride! I still need to clean up my garage but the truck is once again running. As a bonus, there are NO VIBRATIONS now! As smooth as butter at 65mph.

I am thinking I'm going to need to re seal or replace my water pump this summer. Is OEM replacement the best thing to do? It's leaking a few drops every time I drive it. Probably a cup or less every hundred miles. I want to have zero leaks to be as minimally intrusive as possible on the trail.

Can you tell where it's leaking from? Not that it really matters if it's the weep hole or the gasket because if you pull it off you might as well replace it if there's any question.

You want either a Toyota 16100-39345 (should sub to 16100-39346) or Aisin WPT-007. It's cheaper by about half to get the AIsin from Amazon.

I can't tell. There are a couple drops appearing at the bottom of the water pump. I'll see about ordering those seals tomorrow.

The truck ran flawlessly this evening! More photos later when I do a run report but for now...

When I look it up in the Stevinson online parts finder tool, I find: 161003934683 as the water pump part number. Does that sound right? Are the other part numbers the same thing for other 22RE engine variants?

I also am going to replace the radiator hoses while I'm at it. Anything special about them that I should know? Are there other hoses involved in the cooling system I should be replacing? Like heater core hoses or bypass hoses or etc?

The part number you have adds -83 to the end. I don't know the significance of it, but the first 10 digits are what I would expect. Personally I used the Aisin from Amazon. I'll sometimes stick with Toyota red boxes but I have no trouble going straight to Koyo, Aisin, Nippon-Denso when it's cheaper to get them directly without the Toyota middle man mark up.

There's the 3 main hoses, one upper and two lower (there's a hard piped elbow halfway bolted to the engine). You should replace the bypass hoses under the throttle body. No one remembers those until you get a leak. Depending on the year of the 22R-E they may be 2 or 3 IAC hoses. Might as well replace the heater hoses, too. There are 3 of those.

Now that I'm back from California...

I believe that I ordered all of the hoses I needed today from Stevinson. The guy I talked to on the phone wasn't super familiar with where other hoses might be lurking. There were a total of eight hoses that we identified and that should be in on Friday. I figured I might as well do everything and carry the old hoses as spares.

On Friday it will be a race to see if I can get all of the hoses and the water pump swapped out before heading up to Argentine Pass in the evening. Here's hoping!

I'm FINALLY about to do the water pump replacement on my 4runner in preparation for this weekend's Ghost Town Run.

One question: Is there any goop (Toyota black sealant maybe?) that I should use on the gasket that goes between the water pump and engine? I've read conflicting things on ih8mud and Pirate 4x4.
