Ok so the 72’ I am picking up tomorrow I have decided to try and get it road worthy enough in the next month to drive it out to Cruise Moab probably Friday night and meet up with you all. Lots of unknowns still but things I do know need to happen include:

Flip Bezel

Fix fuel system- pump is bad and carb needs a rebuild.

Replace brand new rotten tires with lessor rotten tires.

Fix everything electrical because not much works. Probably just needs connections cleaned.

Replace battery cables because they are opposite colors currently (anti theft)

Replace tie rod, relay rod, drag link, plus all ends- they are all bent and in rough shape.

Replace all rubber brake lines because the are falling apart and go through rest of brake system.

Fix windows because regulators are worn and glass wont close all the way. May just go doorless for now.

Go through cooling system when running and replace hoses as needed.

Replace orange death fan with new plastic.

Put new wipers on because it always snows or rains on the way.

Go through ignition system carry some extra points and condenser.

Change every fluid and every filter.

Install winch if I have time.

Removed diamond plate and fender flares- this will probably happen within the first hour of ownership.

Make a functional speedo and gauges so I can tell temp and oil pressure.

Clean gas tank.

Rebuild parking brake.

Clean everything because its filthy.

Pray for decent weather so its not all done with sideways snow.

Drive slowly to Moab and drink beer with friends around a camp fire.

It begins. The Orange death fan is the factory steel radiator fan that eventually fail from metal fatigue and try and exit through the shroud and hood. I had one that the shroud was ripped open and had a hole in the hood from a failure. So now I put a later plastic fan on when I encounter them.

New car in a can doing its thing. Its always nice to see the color come back. Flare removal in progress and they must have run some wide tires at some point because both rear fenders were bent from impact.

Took me 12 months to do everything you listed, so you'll probably get it done in time for CM!

Mild easy progress amongst the snow today. Front wheel bearings are loose and with probably rebuild the front knuckles when I have a warmer weekend day. Both rear brake drums about fell off so have some adjusting to do with the braking system forsure. Also got the other side diamond plate off and its just as rusty as the other side. Hope to keep making progress but looks like snow almost all next week. Love me some steel wheels and hub caps.

Well got the tire carrier on but latches are pretty worn out so may need to order some replacements. The latching mechanism is still available new and there are a couple people
making repop catches. Good news is I got the fuel pump replaced but the gas in the truck is real bad. Was able to run it off pouring gas in the carb and it looks to have good oil pressure and sounds healthy. Pulled the carb off and will rebuild it likely tonight. The stupid poly tank doesnt have a drain plug so I think ill have to pull it to clean it. Ill probably replace all the fuel lines as they are full of gunk. Got the new brake lines in the afternoon and got the system all cleaned out and bled up. Progress! Was awesome to hear it run.

More single digit mornings and cold days keep progress slow. Little updates.

Rebuilt the carb at the kitchen table and its dialed. One of the dirtiest I have seen in awhile. Tons of passages clogged.

Ordered lots and lots of small parts and a actually splurged for a new OEM fuel tank 77100-60012 Sender 83320-35020 Gasket 83361-20020 and hardware 93319-14010. Ill need to get rid of my charcoal canister and evap stuff but I dont have to worry about emissions up here.

Learned that the Header on the truck is a smog legal California spec Downey header which is kinda cool.

After dealing with dirty fuel systems in the past I have just decided to replace everything in the fuel system from tank to hard lines.

One thing I am pondering is converting from a vacuum retard distributor to a vacuum advance distributor because I have a new OEM one on the shelf loaded with a petronix unit. This would entail porting the factory carb for the vacuum advance. Anyone have luck with this?

FYI This is how I keep track of what I am working on. Hopefully part numbers can help someone else. FYI this is for a 10/71 build 1972 FJ40. There are some weird year splits on parts.

I bought a new OEM tank maybe in 2008 or so. And then 10 years later I pulled it out to refresh some things, and the bottom was already rusting. I POR-15'd it and stuck it back in. I expect having the abrasion protection of the POR will keep the tank good and healthy for a long time to come. You may consider doing it before slapping it in.

Did you replace the factory tank pads when you put the new tank in so it didnt sit on metal?

I sent one to Jim C awhile back. Turned out great but expensive. Did another recently and had a friend with a machinists drill press do it for beer, also turned out great. Just needed to find the right size brass tube for the line. Seems easy if you have the right tools and have one to compare to.
