I love my 99 4Runner but I'm just curious how other 3rd gens perform coming up I-70 from Dillion to the Eisenhower tunnel. I'm running 80 mph when I hit the hill but 1/2- 2/3 of the way up I can barely maintain 40 mph and by the time I'm at the tunnel entrance I'm probably running 36-38 mph. No missing no stumbling just won't go any faster.

How do other gen 3's do on this hill?

Thanks
Bob

About the same as yours, stock gears, 285/75/16, and automatic. Regear is on my list of things to do to mine... eventually.

I’m 75mph the whole way with 33” tires. The minute I put something on the roof rack I’m down to 70mph. I’m also regeared to 4.88.

I found that in order to go fast up to the tunnel in ours it had to be downshifted at redline on the mat.

Might be time for a tune-up. Spark plugs/wires and O2 sensors and cleaning the MAF sensor could make a difference pretty cheap and easy.

Saw your post this morning and it inspired me to take a little video of my truck coming up to Eisenhower. Sort of a benchmark before I install my supercharger 👹 I can maintain 50 MPH until halfway but can keep it above 40 MPH until the end. This is while towing my 80!

Your signature doesn't have any info on your tire size ect. So not sure of your setup.

I have a unique setup with a manual, regeared to 4.56's. I do have to downshift to 3rd halfway up. Then I take it to about 4200rpm and go about 50mph.

Dang! That is awesome. Our ski boat is likely 1/2 the weight of your 80 and trailer and I have never considered dragging it up and down I-70.

Welcome to the 2F life.. Heading up to the tunnel at 35-40mph every time haha.

If I could fix a V8 by the side of the road with bubblegum and shoelaces I might consider swapping the 2F in my 60 one day.
